I'm surprised no one liked Virgil's. My son digs that one and I do too. But his favorite root beer by far is Frostie Vanilla Root Beer.

Edit: I'm shocked to see that you've allowed Hawk to become a Cal fan. Or maybe he got a job at Big B's?
I think Virgil's was just a drastic change in taste from the others, I'm not sure they wouldn't be fans if it was on it's own.

HFN makes me upset at my dad. He never did cool things like that.

I think we could all say that.

Pretty fun family activity, HFN. I might have to do something like that from time to time when we have kids over for family dinners.

BTW, what was the outcome of the taste test? Which brands were the favorites?

Barq's was by far the fave. Second fave was different for everyone. My second favorite was Sprecher's, ldc's was Hansen's, HFN Jr's was Thomas Kemper, but not the Thomas Kemper Purely Natural which was his most hated.

You may have been wrong that your son couldn't taste the difference, but you were not wrong to question his taste in root beer.

[QUOTE=HuskyFreeNorthwest;691097]Last week on the way home from a flag-football game we stopped at a local burrito place, HFN Jr ordered a root beer. He got the cup and took a drink and said "Yeah that's Barq's I'd always be able to recognize that". I told him I thought he was an idiot and that there was no way he would be able to recognize the difference in root beers at such a young immature age. He was adamant that he could tell the difference.

Today on the way home I stopped by the grocery store and picked up every variety of root beer that they had 14 in total, then I set up a blind taste test for HFN Jr, Captain, Goose and ldc, we did not let Hawk participate.

The boy impressed me, the brands we regualrly buy Barq's, A&W, Mug, Hansen's he was able to peg them all. Nobody was very good at the other brands though, and Thomas Kemper Purely Natural and Virgil's Micro Brew were unanimously hated. Very fun night.

                    • There's a place called Spec's (Nikuman, you should try this place) that is near downtown Houston that has the best selection of food/beverages I've ever seen. I visited it today and picked me up some Abita, Saint Arnold, and Henry Weinhard's root beer. They also have about 20 other types that I'll go back and try at some point (they sell them either by the bottle or by the case).

So far I've only tried the Abita (it's okay but not worth buying again) and Saint Arnolds (very good and smooth with just the right amount of vanilla flavor).

They also had Orangina, which is difficult to find around here.

I know all about Specs. They have other locations as well. It is my wine shop of choice.

Yeah, I went to two shops by my house and the selection was very limited. The downtown location was huge and had everything from a full service deli to pretty much a full supermarket. Very cool!

Have you ever had lunch there? Their deli looked great and people were eating their freshly prepared lunch on the tables after the checkout counters.

Also, where in the world does Moliere live that it's difficult to find Orangina? That stuff is at pretty much every grocery store/market I can think of.
