  • Adventures in flexitarianism

Anybody tried it? Mpfunk and I are trying a flexitarian diet for the new year (mostly vegetables, bean, etc. but not total elimination of any animal/meat products, especially for family functions, etc.).

I'm excited, though I think Mpfunk still requires some convincing. Of course, we will still continue to have steak occasionally.

never heard of it, though it sounds like a healty balanced diet. Kind of like what you see from the food pyramid. And what we should be eating alteady.

Sort of like the food pyramid, except it doesn't necessarily advocate eating enough veggies. The food pyramid as is makes people think that eating a lot of refined pastas and bread means they are eating a "healthy" diet.

      We'll see how it goes!

        Just ate a pound (literally)

of green leafy things. I'm definitely not hungry anymore, but I'm ready for a steak.

Surprisingly no. I've never been less hungry while fasting than today, so it's not all bad, I guess.

So far I have had to eat:

              Breakfast:
              Oatmeal with raisins

              Lunch
Half a heart of romaine lettuce
              Orange
              Carrots with spicy bean dip
              Apple

              Dinner:
              More lettuce
              Probably broccolli-red pepper soup

I hope this is worth it because I miss meat

unless you are willing to permanently eat this way, it seems like this approach is doomed to fail. eventually you will get sick of it and turn back to eating normally.

Wouldn't you be better served moderating your food intake and then getting dedicated to regular exercise/cardio? The exercise also helps your BP and cholesterol, as well as your heart, gives you more energy, etc.

It seems much easier and more fun to make exercise a regular way of life than making extreme fad diets a way of life.

Mainly, I think this is a way to ease into eating more vegetables. I'm sticking with the strict vegetarian diet for about 6 weeks before phasing meat back in smaller portions. Although, I won't stay at this extreme, the heavy vegetable diet will be the norm for now on.

well, good luck to you because you are definitely doing a good thing by increasing your veggie intake. I admire that willpower.
