  • Finished Sing, Unburied, Sing. Easily the finest novel I've read this year and I believe it will prove to be more than "just" a best of 2017. This is a book that could win major prizes and it feels like a work that could be of enduring significance in American literature. The last time I felt so strongly about a novel was my first reading of Robinson's Gilead.

    • Currently reading The Drop by Michael Connelly. He's at the top of my list of favorite authors along with Walter Mosley. I just finished his book All I Did was Shoot My Man. Before that was Vince Flynn Pursuit of Honor. I'm reading him a second time. Too bad he died and can't write more books.

I put each of the above authors slightly ahead of John Grisham - I've read every one of his "adult" books.

I had high hopes for Lee Child but after reading 61 hours I wasn't sure if I was going to read the rest of his books or not.

      • Just finished A Gentleman in Moscow, based on some recommendations here. It was a decent book, but I didn't love it.

Sounds like you just need a snifter of brandy.

I just finished it too, and have the same take on it. I do really want to watch Casablanca now.

I think it could be made into a good movie, if done properly. I liked the characters and the story, but it kind of dragged on.

Pretty interesting so far. Sounds like he's a hair autistic.

Swedish novel about a grumpy old dude. It is a book about relationships and redemption. Recommended.
Just finished listening to this one. Nice little book. Ove reminds me of my dad.

                  • John Sanford - Shadow Prey.

The second book in his "Prey" series. Trying to get started on a new author. Supposed to be a real page turner.

I've tried twice to listen on Duderino's quoted recommendation. Found it to be really aggrevating.

Really? I read it and liked it a lot. You should give it another try?

This book requires patience. The payoff is at the end. But I won't be the least bit offended if you don't try again. Read what you enjoy!

                          • I just finished another Bosch novel - The Black Box. I swear there are elements of this book in Season 3 of Bosch, although the notes for that season list 3 other books as the inspiration for the season.

Oh well. If you like Bosch, this is another good one.

I cranked through all the Connelly-Bosch novels several years ago. Always a good read.

I have avoided the series because I figured it would be a let down.

If you liked the Bosch novels, I think you'll like the series. Connelly is an executive producer on it and I think has a lot of input.

Titus Welliver is really good as Bosch, so much that I have begun to picture him in my mind when I read the novels. As I've mentioned elsewhere in the board, Welliver now does the audio book narration on the newer Bosch novels as well.
