Almost finished with Wool. Haven't read that much sci-fi, but really enjoyed this one.

I just finished it yesterday. I liked it, and I thought it progressed pretty well. I'm trying to decide if I want to read the next books or not. Some of the reviews suggest that the quality isn't as good, and there are several other books I want to read. I admit, I'm interested to see how the story ends, though.

On another note, I read Bel Canto, and I really liked it. It was really interesting, and something pretty different from what I usually read. Excellent writing, and the ending was definitely not what I expected.
      Not that, sickos.

        I hated Bel Canto!

SteelBlue reads about a book a day per his FB library usage/crime repors and Goodreads, so if a book has taken him 2 weeks to finish 1/3 of then I have no hope.

Anyone here have any thoughts on Harper Lee's new book? I read an article from the NYT with a lot of people from Monroeville that seemed quite skeptical about it. The person in charge of her estate says she is lucid and supporting the release of the book, but there may be some financial motivation on their part. Either way, I'm excited. It may be a bit overplayed but I've read To Kill A Mockingbird 3-4 times and recently Jr and I read it at the same time, it is one of my favorites.

What did you hate about it? Given the tone exclamation point, my guess is that you'll say you hated everything.

I read it several years ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy. I remember going in with high expectations due to some of the reviews it was getting, but I thought the story fell flat. And the message ("Hey, terrorists are people, too!") made me barf. Seemed like a bad Lifetime movie.

I think you're probably right. I've been watching old interviews with him on youtube, and in one with Charlie Rose, he basically says he knew most of the initial glowing reviews he got were bullshit because there was no way anyone had read the book that fast.

                  No kidding.

SteelBlue, how do crank through these books so quickly? Boring desk job?

I've essentially stopped watching television, and I'm a bit of an insomniac. So, I often read from 10 pm to midnight or 1am.

                      Gotcha.

I have started using whispersync on my kindle app with the audio companion. I listen in my car as a I drive to and from work and around town. Synchs automatically with my text location. Wonderfully easy to use and it has made a huge difference in how quickly I can get through a book.

I can see that take. I didn't have the high expectations you did, so that might have affected how I read it.

Thought this passage from Infinite Jest was prescient. Assuming it was written somewhere between 1986 and 1994, it ends up being a pretty good description of Netflix/Amazon Prime etc...image.jpg

Finished this yesterday. About 1/2 way through I really didn't it much or any of the characters. I ended up liking the book and am glad I stuck with it.

Started The Son last night. That and Stephen King are on tap for the next few weeks.
