Late fall and early winter seemed like a good time to I give it a go.

I haven't enjoyed McCarthy's writing style in the past, but I loved reading this book. It was a total page turner for me. Watching the walking dead has turned me into a little bit of an post-apocalypse guy, so I was enthralled by his ability to take it up to a whole new level with complete world annihilation. Realizing that it is a work of fiction, I would love to have learned more about what caused the devastation. You know, so I can be better prepared when it actually does happen.
Kind of funny. I picked this book up a few years ago to read over Thanksgiving. My wife decided to drive the whole way from Vegas to Salt Lake and so I was able to get through 3/4 of it in one blast. The next day while cleaning up after the big turkeyday feast, I was cleaning all of the meat off of the bird, and for whatever reason, the process connected with a few parts of the book a little too closely, and affected me to the point that I never never picked the book up again to finish the last 50 pages or so. I noticed a couple weeks ago that the movie is on Netflix, so I'll probably just sit down and watch it some night.

That's a shame. You missed the best part of the book. That is the only time I can ever remember reading a book and weeping.

I know you posted this in 2010, I'm just giving you credit so that Lebowski and Piney don't beat up on me. I'm on pace to finish The Book Thief tonight. Great book. I wonder if the movie does it justice?

I read the first 50 pages of that and gave up. Can't remember why, but it did nothing for me.

          Books I have been reading:

The second Jack Reacher - these are fun.

The Chocolate War - by Cormier. This a book for teens written in the 70's that I would not let my teen read. Liked the book, hated the ending, felt like there was no resolution.

Netherland - by Joseph O'neil. Post 9/11 book about a dutch guy in NYC that talks about way to much cricket. Was supposed to be one of the best books from 2008. It was stupid.

The Yellow Birds - by Powers. Spend some time with PTSD. Didn't really enjoy this very much. Was a quick read, thankfully.

Reading reviews for The Book Thief, I came across many who shared your opinion. The book seems to either really move a reader or it does nothing at all for them. I didn't see much in between. I think you should give it another chance. It has been an interesting and different take on a subject where it's very difficult to find an avenue that hasn't already been explored.

I've read two or three and agree with Piney's comment. I believe it was FM that noted that Reach is a badass, which is accurate.

Still $2.99? I almost felt guilty paying that price.

                    $4.99. Still pretty cheap.

You guys are crazy. I use the library system. Very rarely do I actually buy a book. Of course I have accounts at 2 public library systems in Ut, and then my local one. I am too cheap.

I use the library for 90% of what I read. I do buy from Amazon when the price is right, (speaking of which The Road is currently $5.99). I'm cheap too.

                          That is $5.00 too much.

I am more lazy than cheap. The fact that I can order what I want on Amazon and it is either electronically delivered to my kindle or (in the case of an actual book) shows up at my door is worth more to me than the fact that the library is free.

Lately I've been so lazy that I am listening to a lot more books on Audible than actually reading them.

Of course. But it takes me about 10 seconds more to go to the library site and then download the book through Amazon for free.

I have been listening to a lot of books lately too. For some reason I am loving Joe Hill's book NOS4A2. Probably only a couple of hours left. He is literally the heir to Stephen King.
