      • Just finished two excellent book on Pacific naval history. First I read Sea of Glory by Nathaniel Philbrick. It is about the US Exploring Expedition in the 1830's that involved the discovery of the Antarctic continent and exploration of many of the Pacific islands. The artifacts from this trip were used to start the Smithsonian collection. Incredible four year adventure. Philbrick is an outstanding author (also wrote In the Heart of the Sea).

Next I read a fairly recent book the Bounty mutiny. For some reason, that story has always facinated me. Contrary to what you may have been led to believe, Fletcher Christian is a no-good, low-life scum bag who caused the deaths of many men and ruthlessly kidnapped a bunch of Tahitians. The real hero of this story is William Bligh.

I thought the plot was a little flawed in places, but a very powerful, emotional story. I enjoyed the ride very much.

I read The Bounty years ago (right after it came out) and thought is was really good. I agree that it does give you a different Fletcher Christian from the movies. What William Bligh did after the mutiny is nothing short of a miracle! What most people don't know is that he actually made Admiral ( though that wasn't as difficult as it sounds - once one made Post Captian - promotions were automatic, stictly seniority. The people ahead of you just had to die.)

I have Sea of Glory on my request list at the library. Somehow that list never seems to get shorter

Finished No Easy Day - fascinating read. The authors tell the story in a no nonsence, this is what happened style. For what amounts to an autobiography there is not a whole lot of "Look at Me - see what a great guy I am" stuff.

The book is "Owens" story of his SEAL career. It starts when he enlists in the Navy just before 9/11 ands with him gettting out of the Navy shortly after THE raid.

The story of the UBL raid is roughly the last 1/3 of the book ( about 100 pages)

They do not use a whole lot of military jargon, so the non-military types should be able to understand what is going on.

                Some Spoilers
                Spoiler for Spoilers:

"Owens" was also on the raid the rescued the Captain of the Alabama Maersk off of Somalia

Was on the Team that was going to get UBL in '07, but the intel didn't pan out.

Was on the mission to rescue a captured Americian, but again the intel was not accurate.
Was on the Chopper that crashed at the UBL compound

Spent most of his 10+ years as a SEAL on active operations.

In his opinion, if you want to be a SEAL, don't be an officer.

Was it the full 1400 page Les Mis or some kind of abridged version?

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

over the weekend. I am so glad I never spent time in post school singles wards. This is a funny, interesting book, though much more crass than I expected. She would do well in this forum.
Just finished this. Very entertaining and fun read. However, it seemed that as the book progressed, she seemed more inclined to promote caricatures of the LDS faith in order to get an easy laugh (your own planet, etc.). But that is nitpicking and I would be interested to see where she goes from here with her writing. That's the weird thing, though. If you go to her website (www.elnabaker.com) it seems that nothing has been updated since 2009. It is like she fell off the planet or something.

both a good police procedural and physcological thriller. Ms French can really paint pictures in words. I think she could make the phone book interesting reading.

She continues her plot device of using a minor character in the previous novel as the main character in the current novel.

Very good beginning and middle, but I found the ending just a little off.

Even with that, I would highly recommend this one or any her novels.
