I'm sorry. You didn't word it in the form of a question. You lose. Get off the set.

Endo has his own views on the conflict between "his Japanese sensibility" and the Catholicism to which he converted as a child. While such conflict is natural between cultures, I don't know that I necessarily agree with that being the primariy reason for how things played out in the book and in a historical sense.
Wasn't that made into a movie? I swear I saw a movie on the same topic with the same name back in college.

Are you talking about Shogun, a TV miniseries based on the Clavell novel? I remember it being all the rage with Japanese RMs back then (I was as caught up in it as the rest). It seems so campy now.

I googled and found out that Scorsese is going to do the movie.

Scorsese to make “Silence” by Shusaku Endo

WOW! No doubt Daniel Day-Lewis will play the apostate priest Ferriera. I'm actually excited about a movie coming out.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Shogun? Heavens no. I couldn't stand that.

I saw on campus as an undergrad at BYU. It was either part of international cinema or it was associated with one of my advanced Japanese language classes. All in Japanese although it may have had subtitles. I remember at one point they buried a Christian in sand up to his neck and kept running a horse back and forth over the top of him trying to get him to deny his faith. In other case they had a painting of Jesus and they tried to get the Christians to step on it or something.

I think this might be it:

            http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067755/

At the time I thought it was excellent.

lol on Shogun. I'd originally written something much more critical, but feared offending you. I should have known better.

Yes, Chinmoku is it, but the book does not describe the "buried in the sand, horse" torture. It does relate the requirement to step on sacred images (Christ or Mary)--called fumi-e--in order to prove that one was not a Christian, although that didn't always rescue one from torture.

A couple of examples worn down from all the trodding:

                .

I actually liked the book. The miniseries left something to be desired.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Downtown Owl is next on my list as soon as I finish The Hunger Games. How does it compare to his other stuff?
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

You asked me that earlier in the thread!

I haven't liked it as much as the essay books.

The funny thing is I was going to compare your response to what the other guy had said earlier in the thread. I just forgot that other guy was you.

Holy crap that thing is dry. I am also using a study guide by Rita McCulhay or something like that. All I want is 61% on this stupid exam.
