I read the first five Alex Cross novels then crossed James Patterson off of my list of authors to read. Some of the stuff in those books required me to ignore major flaws in the logic of the book. Then at one point I felt that he was jerking around the reader a bit too much. That's when he got dumped.

His name is on nearly 200 books, but I won't be opening another one.

    • I just finished this one:
      https://www.amazon.com/Curious-Incid.../dp/1400032717

It’s ostensibly a murder mystery (victim: black lab), but anyone with half a brain will ID the culprit by the second chapter. It’s really an exploration of the imagined mind of an autistic teen. Interesting but not worth more than 5 bucks & 2 hours.

Yes it was serious. I have not really heard that before.

As for the book, it was overrated and heavy handed. I didn't like it that much. Plus the whole train thing was kind of stupid.
        Totally overrated.

You’re all wrong, but that’s ok. Colson Whitehead was a very impressive speaker. I was surprised at how funny he was. He could probably do stand up and make a living. After sharing 45 minutes of life experiences, he did a reading from the UR and maybe looked down at the book 3 times. He knows it, or at least that chapter, by heart.

Afterward he stayed and signed books. He took the time to talk with each person who wanted to talk and signed however you wanted your book signed. We asked if he’d take a pic with our book club after the signing and he said “let’s just do it now.” So we pissed off everybody in line as he left the table and joined us for pics. Overall a great experience. I always enjoy meeting someone I admire, but it’s even better when they turn out to be cooler than you imagined.

Sounds cool. At least it wasn't George Saunders. That guy...

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Ask him yourself, he's going to be in Vegas this Saturday speaking at the Historic Fifth Street School Auditorium, 4 p.m.. Admission is free. He took questions from the audience for a good 20 minutes here in Redding, and several of them were as lame as yours but he still answered them.

Like the guy that asked Colson to summarize, in a sentence, what message he hoped his readers to take away his book.

"Look, if I could do that I would have written a tweet instead of a novel."

I haven't read any of these () but I heard the author of Black Washington talking on NPR and it made me want to read the book.

Any opinions on the list? I've heard less than stellar things about the winning book.

I haven't read any either. Interesting about the winner, I had not heard that.

I briefly looked them all over and only The Mars Room piqued my interest enough to request it from the library. I'll have to check out that NPR interview.
