I love Peer Gynt. I'll agree with on Mahler, too, although I like my favorite is the 9th. As far as symphonies go, Beethoven, Dvorak, and Mahler don't have rivals.

Chopin's Nocturne (Op. 9 #2) is one I really like right now. It always reminds me of The Pianist, which is a great movie.
I love all of the Chopin nocturnes. The c minor one (I can't remember the opus number) is gorgeous.

Wow...I'm noticing that all of my favorite pieces are in minor keys. Am I really that depressing?

I now have my music selection for my zen on Wed when I'm on-call (I love rhapsody). Call me weird, but when I round I have buds in and am listening to soothing music to calm my soul. No attending complaints thus far.

thanks for the ideas. Keep em coming.

For symphonies, I really like Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Especially Winter. I guess that makes me depressed too

Do we have an epidemic of depressed doctors in this nation, or is it only in the southern portion of Utah?

Mental illness is what drives you to medicine. Why would you want this job if you were sane?

It also causes insanity for the significant others. Nothing like being a married-single mother.

Too hard to pick one. There are so many greats.

I love the funeral march, 2nd movement, from Beethoven's 3rd. Very somber, but beautiful. Our hero dies, is dragged to hell, only to be brought back triumphantly at the end of the symphony.

These are the most moving adaptations of Ode to Joy, The Blue Danube Waltz and Habanera in the history of music.

One of my all time favorite paintings is of Modest Mussorgsky. It was painted days before Mussorgsky died. You can see the ill effects of alchoholism on his face, and his unkempt figure. But his eyes, they still gleam with musical genius.
