  • Songs that remind you of high school

I could have sworn there was a thread for this already, but I can't seem to find it.

There are certain songs, that bring back very specific memories of HS for me.

    * When Doves Cry - Prince summer between soph and junior year, just got my license and my best friend was the lifeguard at a small pool at a local RV park. It was a summer of swimming, meeting new girls, and loving my new found freedom.

    * Boys of Summer- Don Henley Building the Perfect Beast was stuck in the tape deck of Mike Rudi's 76 International Scout, so every morning when he would pick me up to go to before school batting practice, I would hear this song. I can't hear this song without remembering Dottie [...], "her brown skin shining in the sun".

    * Shout-Tears for Fears Stupid song that brings back and even stupider memory. Darren Tate at the end of school, at Phillips Lake, drunkenly climbing on top of some rocks, tearing his shirt off, screaming, "Shout! Shout! Let it all out", then falling down scraping himself into a bloody mess.

    My contribution:

Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith One of my best friends always had this song blaring when he pulled up in his Ford Maverick. Usually on the way to and from football practice with another close friend. It got to the point where my siblings would hear the song and tell me my ride was here before the car reached the driveway. When the song opened Rich Linklater's film "Dazed and Confused", I first thought something had been stolen from my memories but later realized this was probably a common occurrance for 1970s high school kids.

Good Times Roll - The Cars This became the theme song for my close group of high school friends. It became a phrase and was shortened to "GTR" after one of my friends saw my CTR ring and thought it was GTR. I still get asked by them if I still have my GTR ring.

Insider - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from the Hard Promises LP. It was released just as we were graduating HS and I had just gotten an early version of a boom box. We had planned a camp out at a lake but plans changed at the last minute to a nearby park. There would be no over night camping but we hung out and starting cooking pancakes. Some friends noticed all our parked cars and we were soon joined by girls. It turned into a great party. As things were breaking up, we talked about our post graduation plans. One of my friends decided we all should pledge to attend one another's weddings. I agreed to attend my friends' weddings but was silient on my friends attending mine - none of them were LDS. That's when the song "Insider" began to play, "...and I've had to live with some hard promises..."
“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”
"All things are measured against Nebraska." falafel

As I clicked on and am reading this - Sweet Emotion is playing on the radio... weird.
