It also gives a realistic view of the time and methodology it takes to investigate what is most likely a serial murder. I see some likeness and influence between this series and The Silence of the Lambs. Although True Detective is more philosophical and I find that aspect interesting, it might not translate to good TV for everyone.
It is definitely slow to develop, however they have done enough to keep my attention. The previews for future episodes look great. After watching last night I can see why Woody is cheating on his wife, his booty calls body is in a different dimension compared to his old lady.

Best show on TV. McConaughey is brilliant. I'm surprised there isn't more discussion about this show.

I'm waiting until it is finished so I can binge watch it. Its killing me though.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I really enjoy True Detective. McConaughey and Harrleson at their best. Very curious how the bust will go down that the series is building up to and how that 1995 raid shaped the main characters in the 17 years since. Per the timeline (going from memory), the main characters are partners for about 5 or maybe 7 years and this investigation takes place at the begining of their partnership. So something happens years after the big bust so that they are no longer partners and don't speak to each other.

Yeah it started a bit slow but last night was awesome. I am really starting to like this show. I am disappointed that Woodys side piece is no longer a part of the show.

I had to look up Alexandra Daddario on IMDB just to be sure she's no longer in the True Detective series. You're right, last night was her last episode. And I figured out where I'd seen this actress before, she was in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians movies. One of my teenage kids was a fan of the books and I watched one of the movies with her because Uma Thurman was in it. Dadario's Annabeth > Thurman's Medusa (although Thurman had an obvious handicap).

No one has yet addressed the most important factors in evaluating an hbo show: 1) quality of nudity; and 2) frequency of nudity.

We have definitely addressed it. HBO will never top this.

mpfunk: you need to do your homework on Alexandra Daddario's scene. That addresses the quality.

The frequency can be found with plot points of the detectives following leads in family unfriendly bars and the main victim was a sporting gal some of the time.
HBO is not changing its stripes with this series.

Tonight's episode is blowing my mind. This thing is way deeper than a murder mystery. I seriously have goosebumps.

Didn't see that one coming - as far as the big bust and "shoot out". I was expecting Cohle (MM) to go all commando on the raid and take out the bad guys since it was alluded that the "bad guys" didn't survive and Cohle had a just been through a gun fight in the projects as well as having one in his past in Port Houston. Now it makes sense why Cohle and Hart (WH) stayed partners years afterward.
Spoiler for A guess on where this is going:

Now I wonder what breaks up their partnership and what Cohle has been doing for the past 10-12 years. One possibility is that he goes vigilante; another is that he becomes an undercover Federal officer since it is implied "big people" are involved in the happenings in Louisiana. I think the latter may be a better possibility since Cohle mentions a bible verse in 1 Corinthians about "staying part of the body" when given the chance to take disability and leave law enforcement. He wouldn't take it and played his hand to land a homicide assignment - to remain part of the body. There's still 3 episodes left. So maybe Cohle is forced to make another change and it could be what leads to the split between Cohle and Hart. Then Cohle choses to remain part of the body and works for DC after working for Texas and Louisiana. It's clear he's stayed local and continued to investigate the serial killings for some reason. This theory as is also consistent with Cohle's philosophical bablings about "multiple dimensions", mortal existence being circular, and nothing ever being solved. Just a guess, but Cohle is still working the case in another life as a Fed man. The two black detectives interviewing Cohle ask what he's being doing all these years and Cohle replies, "I've already told you".
