Jay-Z new album is already platinum and will not be released to the public until July. Samsung paid Jay-z 20 million dollars to promote his album through them and let them release it to SIII, S4, and Note owners via an exclusive app in 16 days. I think this is a great idea and it has gained a lot of steam. 1 million free downloads paid for by Samsung.

Jay-Z is always doing something to change the game.

That spot during the game last night with Rick Rubin, Timbaland, Pharrell, and Swizz Beatz was tight. It was like 3 minutes long it seemed. Can't imagine what that cost Samsung. Also, Rick Rubin seems like one of the coolest cats. Dude has worked with just about every significant artist of the last 3 decades.

First time I saw Rubin in a video was in Jayz 99 problems. I thought it was a member of zz top at first. I read his bio a few years back he started def jam (later bringing on russell simmons) and is now the head of Columbia records. He has like 5 grammys as a producer and has discovered so many artists including slayer, llcoolj, adele, run dmc, beastie boys, rhcp, dj jazzy jay. He also discovered amd signed andrew dice clay.

I agree that this is new; disagree that this changes the game. Only a handful of big, established bands could get this kind of gig. This is the model Napster was on track to following on a broader scale before shit-ass Metallica and co. stepped in and ruined it for everybody. For how popular it was, Napster could have gotten billions in banner sales that could have been distributed to artists on a per-download basis. Instead they got shut down, 5 more less popular, virus-infested sites/programs stepped in to take up the slack, and itunes and the rest were quickly established as the money makers.... and now nobody buys albums and the only way artists make money is by touring.

Yeah it's funny to watch those old videos and Beastie Boys promos. He was so much more hyper back then. Must be before he really learned to appreciate weed. Even though I'm a huge Beasties fan I've always found Rick a little annoying. Can't argue with results though. Everything he touches turns platinum. As cj said he has discovered a lot of talent and routinely takes established artists in interesting directions when he works with them.

Yeah he was behind the Johnny Cash cover album too, right? I'm most interested in hearing some of the Smashing Pumpkins cuts from the Adore era (maybe coming out w the Adore re-issue later this year) when Virgin panicked and brought in the Ringer when those sessions stalled b/c Billy kept starting from scratch time and time again. There's one particular song in Pumpkins lore called 'Let Me Give the World to You' that every fan loves, even though the definitive, Rick Rubin produced Adore-era version has never been released or leaked (a Machina 2 version was later recorded, but everyone still wants the Rick Rubin version). It's reported that the inclusion of that song on Adore as a single would have made the album a runaway hit and that they were crazy not to include it.

Anyway, the story goes, as per an old blog of Billy's:
Off their suggestion, we end up recording one song with famed producer Rick Rubin (who I know a bit socially)…the as of now still unreleased “Let Me Give the World to You” (with Joey playing drums)…after a few false starts of direction, we eventually end up recording the song live, with no vocals…after various incarnations and incantations, I suggest straightening the beat out with a four-on-the-floor tom-tom drive…at first Rick is bored by this, doesn’t agree with where we are headed, and goes to lay on the couch (I don’t blame him)…after about 5 minutes, he leaps up, and says “that’s it, that’s it, let’s do it!”, and we commence doing takes (Rick’s enthusiasm is contagious)…after 68 takes, I am finally satisfied…James, D’arcy, and I are pretty used to working this way all the time, but Joey looks absolutely shell-shocked…he later (in an interview) describes working with us (I’m paraphrasing) as one of the most intense experiences he has ever had in music, but goes on to add that beyond any doubt he may have had in the moment, in the end he realized that what we were after was worth all the effort…
Rick Rubin seems like the timeless wizard of music. I'd read his autobiography if he had one.

I'd read a Rubin autobiography in a heartbeat. I bet that guy has stories like no other. Dude started Def Jam while in high school if I recall correctly.

I think it was from his college dorm room. He was a DJ and started a label or something meanwhile.

He did production for all of those groups/artists. He didn't discover any of them.

He discovered LL Cool J and Public Enemy. He may not have "discovered" the beastie boys but they were a punk group and he told them to drop Kate Schellenbach and to start rapping, so he discovered the rap version of the Beastie Boys.

Similar with Slayer, first album sold 40,000 copies mostly in the UK. Rubin and Russell Simmons hear the album and take a chance on them even though they are a hip hop label and they blow up. Maybe not technically discovered them but put them on the map.

I know LL obviously got his break from Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons when they put out Radio as the first Def Jam release, but I always thought Ad Rock discovered him...
