  • How difficult is it to be published?

    Pretty damn difficult I imagine.

I just discovered a girl I went to high school with and who was in ward growing up is getting a book published be Harper Collins (well, Harper Teen). The book is around 350 pages long and looks like it fits in that Hunger Games genre.

I recall that she was a good student and pretty bright but don't recall any aspirations to being an author.

But to me this seems like quite an achievement.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

My BYU roommate has a book coming out in a month. My wife's BYU roommate is published (not sure the genre). A girl in our previous ward has a parenting book that is published. A girl from our BYU married ward is published (Edenbrooke).

It's probably rare, but we seem to know people that get published.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

BYU is the Harvard of the west so.of course you're going to run.into people doing extraordinary things. As for Utah grads, no such luck. They maybe run into someone submitting something to that nonsense Amazon writing contest or something.

All you have to do is rip off Ender's Game.
