I was pondering the other day what was my favorite album, book, and movie of the year. I thought it might be a fun thread for others put down what was their tops of the year.
TELEVISION SERIES I enjoyed Sherlock and Downton Abbey. I love Mad Men, but this was Walt and Jesse's year. I think Breaking Bad was by far the best thing on TV in 2012
MOVIE: By far my hardest category to choose. I didn't see anything memorable this year. I was going to choose Crazy, Stupid Love, because I saw it in 2012, and thought it was clever, and funny, but after looking it up I see it is from last year. I saw all the big comic book movies this year, they were all meh. The Bourne series are some of my favorite movies of all time, the 4th iteration is not. I would have to give Lincoln my vote, due to DDL's amazing performance.
ALBUM: Unlike movies, there were several albums I enjoyed this year. Off the top of my head: Grizzly Bear-Shields, Lana Del Ray- Born to Die, Imagine Dragon-Night Visions, Dirty Projectors-Swing Lo Magellan, Taylor Swift-Red (my wife and daughters nomination), Dinosaur Jr-I Bet on Sky, etc. The most re-listenable and enjoyable LP in 2012 was The Lumineers- The Lumineers; the song that gets all the radio play-Ho Hey, is the 3rd or 4th best single. It is an amazing debut album, which means their follow-ups will likely blow, like most of my favorite artists.
BOOK: I read 15 or 20 books this year, most were forgettable. However, I really enjoyed Steve Jobs-Walter Issacson, Unbroken-Laura Hillenbrand, and Fearless-Eric Blehm. But surprisingly, my favorite book was about something the occured 20 years ago and was over in a heartbeat- The Last Great Game: Duke vs. Kentucky and the 2.1 Seconds That Changed Basketball- Gene Wojciechowski. It is a fascinating sports biography, with tons of great anecdotes and behind the scene stories, of what went into one of the most memorable plays in NCAA history.
