Johnson is woke, and knows how to make you feel like you put down $10 a ticket for sociology homework. Solo suffered at the box office as fall out from Johnson's arrogance, and not from it's own merits.
Yes. Notice how all of the military leaders for the good guys in TLJ were women and all the military leaders for the bad guys were men? OK, whatever. But casting Laura Dern (with purple hair!) as a top military commander was one of the worst casting decisions ever. So bad. Still makes me laugh.

Rotten Tomatoes also has the same story. Rating Star Wars/Marvel franchise entries only by attendance is pointless, most are going to see them, it's what they think of them that matters.

            TFA - Critics: 93%, Audience: 86%
            TLJ - Critics: 91%, Audience: 43%
            TRoS - Critics: 55%, Audience: 86%

            Solo - Critics: 70%, Audience: 63%

When critics approve and the audience doesn't, wokeness is one component that could be a factor. Star Wars is at its best when playing to the large mythological substructure as the main driver of the story with social commentary naturally woven in. When the social commentary takes the driver's seat, the audience notices--because the story suffers. The critics however, see the woke narrative as a positive.

Audience scores are usually a little closer to my view than critics scores generally. Critics give points for stuff I don't care about too often. Comic book films are the exception, as audience scores are always higher on those than how I like them. Star Wars is similar to comic book films in that way. But I go with the audience scores here. I put it at TFA 7.2, TLJ 6.5, TRoS 7.6. Solo 6.7. Not evaluated as individual films but considering the Star Wars experience also.

The Russians are absolutely amazing. They caused Rian Johnson to make a movie where half the leads go on a pointless wild goose chase, ends the arc for one of the main villains in bizarre fashion and leaves absolutely no cliffhanger or questions to be answered in the final movie.

The cherry on top was Rose Tico saving Finn and showing the energy beam destroying the rebels in the background as they kissed. Merchandise sales took a nose dive after that movie.

Abrams didn't have much to work with and A LOT to fix.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Lol. I see by your critiques that the entire theme of the movie went right over your head. That’s ok- hopefully ROS provided enough pew pew and whoosh whoosh to make you happy. Wait were you the one boycotting this hit movie in protest of the last hit movie? I can’t keep you guys straight...

There's a guy in my office who feels similarly. I wasn't a big fan of TLJ. I 'm pretty sure I cataloged somewhere on this site (maybe this thread) how the projector broke in the theater during what ended up being the final battle scene. The theater gave us tickets and my son and I went to Jumanji right afterwards. We both enjoyed Jumanji a lot more than at TLJ.

That said, I've been showing my kids the Star Wars movies lately. We just watched TFA and TLJ last night. In the theater, I remember thinking it felt really long. Google is telling me that it is the longest of the Star Wars movies - 152 minutes. The original trilogy averaged 125 minutes each. While I agree with much of the criticism of TLJ, I think that knowing what would happen made it a little more bearable for me. I enjoyed it the second time around more so than the first time.

I will be going to see Rise of Skywalker with all my kids.

                            • The Last Jedi was a huge steaming pile of shit. Telling people that it "went over their head" is some nuancy craft beer bullshit. A bad movie is a bad movie. I've watched it a half dozen times now trying to figure out how some people got a huge boner for it...and it just sucks.

Rise of Skywalker was fantastic. I went in with really low expectations and I enjoyed it very much.
