Also, the WW2 era spaceship battles with laser bullets and cannons that do only minor damage. No automated aiming systems? Haha. Then they completely ignore space-time issues. They walk around in ships when there is no gravity. They go from outer space to big open docks on space ships and voila! no problem with the vacuum of space. Oy vey.

And that is the tip of the iceberg. It is, by definition, an alternate universe. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Also consider that it supposedly happened a long time ago when most of this technology wasn't invented. So we know that much is totally fake.

I don't think it is a matter of making sure that such movies are consistent with all current scientific knowledge. Instead, I think it is more a matter of identifying those particular problems that cause you to revoke your suspension of disbelief. It's easy to suspend disbelief when you're watching spaceships behave like jet fighters. But when you are watching a spaceship consume a sun it is much harder, at least for some people, to maintain that suspension of disbelief.

Personally I didn't have a problem with that particular issue. I can usually suspend disbelief in these movies unless they engage in time travel. For some reason time travel issues always drive me crazy.

I thought the Star Wars film was fun but not fantastic. It's certainly worth seeing on the big screen but I'm not sure it's worth the hype it has received. I think Abrams was trying to satisfy the base (so to speak) while also drawing in a new generation of fans. It looks like he managed to do so, helped along by some good marketing.
      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

You are fine with faster-than-the-speed-of-light travel, complete disregard for the laws of motion (inertia, momentum), gravity, etc. but by golly that sun-swallowing thing is a deal-killer?

        Uh... OK.

Also, everyone ages the same despite frequently traveling at the speed of light and living on different planets which seem to always have the same gravity.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Did you read my post? Did you see where I said the sun thing doesn't bother me? It looks like you are arguing with someone other than me.

I am confident you are familiar with the notion of suspension of disbelief. It is required for every movie, to some degree. Although you seem to want to create a dispute with me you do so despite the fact that my point is not necessarily inconsistent with yours. We all have different points where we are no longer willing to suspend disbelief. You are apparently willing to overlook everything for this film. Others not so much. The difference between us is that I don't laugh at people who have a different point than I do. I might disagree, but sooner or later everybody finds something where they think it just goes too far.

This really isnt hard to follow. You are just choosing not to do so. As you wish.

So "LOL" or "Haha" = OK, but "you are making me laugh" = over the line?

Sorry, it is actually is kind of hard to follow.

You know, I find it hard to believe you can't let go. If that is what you think it is all about, then I will leave you to it. I think my original post was pretty straightforward. You either are willing to suspend disbelief or you're not willing to do so. Where that point occurs differs. You lol at people who differ with you on that point. I don't. See? Easy. How this expands to the entire internet or makes my reaction to your obfuscation a "gotcha". escapes me. But there it is. A lot of things escape me.

Creekster, I am sorry that I engaged in some friendly internet banter in this thread. I apologize to anyone who might be offended that I was metaphorically laughing at them. I will try to better follow your example going forward.

And please let me know if there are any other differences in our behavior that you would like to correct.
