That's ok, I hate both Koreas. But generally only in winter olympic years. Can't stand their cheating in speed skating.

This is funny. Native koreans have a lot of pride in their speed skating and, oh man, they hate Apollo Anton Ohno so bad. Sometimes, in order to explain where I'm from (Utah), I mention the 2002 winter olympics. If they still don't catch on I just say "oh, you know, that whole Ohno deal." They all know his name. It's like a swear word over here.

So I guess what I'm saying is they feel the same way about us.

While, Fundamentally, I agree with you. It's not like they're obligated to enjoy having American soldiers strutting through the downtown area like they own the place. From what I've seen they're rarely on their best behavior and do very little to placate whatever stereotypes Koreans already have about ugly Americans.

They don't complain unless you broach the subject though and it's not a topic of conversation that comes up often.

I hate it when they screw up Romanized Korean or Japanese. It's Kangnam not Gangnam. wtf is gangnam? the k and g are the same letter in Korean, but it's always pronounced with the hard k sound when it starts a word and always the softer g sound when in the middle of a word.

Pul Kogi is correct.

Pulkogi? Nobody says it like that. Sorry. And, yes it is Gangnam. Nobody says Kangnam. There's a separate letter for a hard "K" in korean.

If we're forced to romanize, I'd spell it Bulgogi everytime.

I mostly side with with Jay on this, although I would probably write it Pulgogi. It should definitely be Romanized with a P when you start a word if you are trying to Romanize it as it sounds. I never heard it pronounced Busan once while I was there.

I took a Korean pronunciation class at BYU where this was emphasized. At the start of the word, consonances take a harsher tone, meaning g->k's, b->p's, d->t's etc.

Of course you could always go the Chinese route and not care about using letters as they actually sound in English. It is pretty cool to spell Q without a u after it and to use lots of X's instead of sh's.

You're information is outdated. They've (the korean government) changed the Romanization rules for choice letters due to the inaccuracy in the sound. pusan -> busan, kangnam -> gangnam, pulkogi -> bulgogi. This happened at least before 2004, when I first came to korea.

During the 6 years (total, not in-a-row) I've lived here with my korean wife, teaching english, attending and graduating from Yonsei University in Korean literature, those kind enough to adjust my pronounciation have told me to soften that first consonant unless it's an aspirated consonant ( ㅋㅌㅊㅍ) or a double consonant (ㅃㅉㄸㄲㅆ). Maybe I've lost my sense of english but this sounds softer than you, and Jay Santos are making it out to be.

Of course none of this matters because it's freaking romanization we're talking about here. a ㄱ simply sounds like a ㄱ and a ㅋ sounds like a ㅋ.


The consonants at the beginning of a word (or better, sentence) could be described as solid but still not aspirated. The rest of them generally tend to flow into one another naturally the same way english consonants blend together when we speak fast.

We were talking about playing it at the stake youth dance the other night. However, much to my surprise, the kids were about 3 months behind Steelblue in getting on the Gangnam bandwagon. So to figure out where they were on the Shake, I asked a couple of YM what they knew about it.

Their response was, "Isn't that just a whole lot of booty shaking and hip trusting?"

Apparently they've already heard of it. Not sure if they think its clever or if they are fans, though.
