Next to The Master, this is the movie I'm most excited for this fall -- it needs its own thread!

This is Rian Johnson's third feature (if you have haven't seen his first two, you should catch up with them), and he's also done some TV (including two great episodes of Breaking Bad). Also, JGL rocks the house! (Though the ladies may be disappointed he doesn't look fully JGL-ish with the Bruce Willis makeup).

I've been nervous about Looper for this very reason. The positive reviews have me smiling.

I didn't like Inception. It was boring to me. I can't figure out why folks got so hung up about that movie being so great. I was bored fast.

So, I guess based on your feelings about Inception, a great number of movies would blow it out of the water. That's cool. I thought Looper was very good and entertaining, but I haven't been thinking about it much since I saw it. Its not on the same level of complexity and character depth as Inception, IMO. For instance,

This was such a hugely satisfying movie. Extremely clever, but never sacrificing emotional depth and character complexity for the sake of cleverness. Both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis were excellent. I loved how Gordon-Levitt managed to evoke a young Bruce Willis with simple gestures and facial expressions.

I always give kudos to a movie that keeps subverting my expectation and this one kept doing it at every opportunity. Zigging when I thought it would zag. I loved that it started with the "if I could talk to my younger self" trope but then took on several more big questions like

what one will do in the name of self-preservation, how violence is often selfish in nature and begets more violence and even the old "If you could go back in time, would you kill Hitler as a baby?" question.

Not only does it raise those interesting questions, it offers some interesting possible answers to them as well.

Also, Jeff Daniels. That guy is fantastic in almost everything he does and he's great here: "I'm from the future. Go to China." What an amazing actor.

Oh, and the maybe the best booty call I've ever seen in film.

We saw this tonight. After the second loop closure scene, I noticed that JGL looked like a Ken doll. Eventually I realized that he had facial prosthetics.

Also, now that I've seen Piper Perabo naked....meh. She can't act and she looks like a piece of birch plywood.

We enjoyed the movie mostly. The trite "China is the future" line that we keep getting seems unimaginative and cliche now. Brazil is the future.

This movie will hold up over time because it doesn't try and preach and it doesn't ever explain how time travel is possible. It just is.
