BYU doesn't sell Coke or Mountain Dew because it would be too much of a pain in the ass to deal with the complaints. I can't imagine that there are too many complaints about the Twilight books, I've never heard that they were offensive at all. I just think Deseret Book is just being hypersensitive and catering to the weirdos. There was guy I saw that walked around the library at BYU bothering people to sign a petition to give to Pres. Bateman saying that the girls at BYU were being immodest because their shirts would sometimes creep up when they bent over and you'd see about an inch of the girl's back. I was incredulous when he stirred me from my reading, and told him to get the hell out of the library and quit bothering people.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Except they don't have sex until they're married. Sure, they want to have sex all the time, but what high schooler doesn't?Originally posted by Commando View Postwell apparently they're "vampire sex books," according to those who are trying to paint the Church as hypocritical for allowing it to be sold in Deseret book. And Harry Potter is evil literature from the occult, too, I guess.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I remember President Samuelson one time saying a lady came up to him and complained they (BYU) were letting her daughter wear to immodest of clothing. He then went on to talk about the repsonsibility the University has, etc. etc.
My response would have been, "lady, you raised her, we are here to provide her a great environment and education. We aren't babysitters. Why don't you go have a talk with her." Of course I never was GA material. Well maybe when I was 8.

Please do. I think if we can all band together here on this board we can write enough bad reviews to really draw some attention over there to the terrible fantasies that these books portray. Old men falling in love with their nurses is just a terrible story line to promote to children. Think of the children!Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostIf a negative review can pull a book, then all you suckers better say goodbye to The Forgotten Carols and The Christmas Box. I am writing Deseret Book as we speak.

Vampires are totally erotic. You can't separate the two.Originally posted by Babs View PostI was going to mention this. It's become a huge problem at elementary schools.
As far as what's offensive, a lot of conservative families find the idea of vampirism itself offensive. And then there's the obvious sexual overtones and the depiction of the forbidden fruit toward which the young girl is so powerfully enticed.
(Now watch someone say that's creepy, SU. I'm just a social critic. Don't kill the vampire, er, the messenger.)When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

LDS have generated two world class (in terms of huge popularity, at least) novelists. They both do fantasy. That's just an observation. By the way, I think LDS titans are a little uneasy having successful artists that generate a cult following in their membership. Card has never seemed totally in the fold. I bet they think he's a loose cannon (which he is, no matter how you approach him). When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

No doubt. I have it on pretty good authority that there were those that thought Lavell was getting too powerful at BYU. I would be very interested to know the full story with the Tuckett situation and who actually did the griping about the influence or stature of the football program.

Are you saying that Covey is a fantasy author? I am not disagreeing with you, btw.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostLDS have generated two world class (in terms of huge popularity, at least) novelists. They both do fantasy. Covey is a novelist! Brilliant. You're so right. Shall we add Paul H. Dunn? Four famous popular novelists and they all do fantasy! It's uncanny.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostAre you saying that Covey is a fantasy author? How long before married people answer the dictators thus: Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn.

Wow, I will act to destroy and bring the government down. I wonder if he means, like voting people out, I hope. He sounds worse than Hannity or Rush or G. Beck.Originally posted by YOhio View Post
Gay marriage is something you feel you need to go out and bring the government down over?? He is probably an Eagle Forum guy. If I were to take the quote literally, the guy scares me.
