    HBO's The Newsroom

Anyone else watching this? It's a new HBO series that aires on Sunday nights about a fictional cable news program. Jeff Daniels plays the anchor and Emily Mortimer plays the executive producer. It pulls in real news events like the oil spill in the gulf coast, the Arizona immigration law, and Tea Party candidates replacing incumbent Republicans (Bob Bennett).

I liked the first episode but the last two have my interest dwindling. Still, I think it has good potential and explores the corporate, commercial, and ratings aspects of news programming in addition to covering the news. It also gets into the personal lives somewhat of the main characters but that hasn't really drawn me in.

Anyway, I recommend the show but not too strongly. I like Jeff Daniel's character. Was disappointed to learn that Marisa Tomei (am a fan of hers) was slotted for the lead female role but it didn't work out.

HBO already has picked it up for a second season.

I love it. I'll watch anything Aaron Sorkin does.

Any more opinions now that season 1 is wrapped up?

I wish the show was a little more even handed on some of the current political issues. For example, they trotted out an elderly minority retiree on medicare as the posterchild for voter-id laws. Because we all know that the main rationale for voter-id laws is to keep grandma from voting.

The show did a good job of contrasting "real" news from "faux celebrity" news when the fictional news channel was slow to cover a popular story about a missing baby. At the same time I was disappointed at how it painted the tea party for threatening not to raise the federal debt ceiling without any discussion of the current problem of federal spending and entitlements. Probably too much to hope for from Aaron Sorkin.

I just finished season 1. The highs were high enough that I will watch season 2. The lows were low enough that I might not watch all of season 2. I think Jeff Daniels is great in the role and Emily Mortimer is really good in the EP portion of the role, not as good in the ex-girlfriend portion. Maggie is a really annoying character. If I were Jim, I would have lost interest in her as soon as she demanded Jim take her roommate out for V-day.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I only saw one episode. The production value seemed great, but the writing was the worst kind of stereotypical liberal dredge. No thanks.

We will watch season two. Not tops in our TV series rotation but good enough.
