  • Some Great Reward: Free Depeche Mode concert

    http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...,3970072.story

What a fun evening this will be! Take the red line to Hollywood & Vine, watch a free Depeche Mode show, go to dinner, walk around Hollywood Blvd and check out the shops.

Hopefully the setlist is heavy on older stuff. I was not digging the new disc stream.

The summer music scene is really firing up in full force. I'm out there guys, and I'm loving every minute of it!!!

    Yeah, you and Babs, both.

OK folks....off to the Red Line to head over to Hollywood and Vine. Date night, Dinner, and Depeche Mode. That is why they call me DDD.

      See You.

      Enjoy The Silence.

Is Martin Gore still dressing up in women's clothing?

I don't know, but I think the guy in your avatar is wearing women's eyeliner (guyliner).

We had a fun time. We clearly arrived late to the party. Some folks had been there since noon. There were about 15K people crammed into a small 3 or 4 block area in the street, but the setup was cool. Those that had tickets were given blue or red wristbands and had access to the 2 main General Admission areas..these were basically the equivalent of floor seats at a normal concert, with a straight-ahead view.

We had no tickets and it made zero sense to me to buy some when we could stand off to the side for free. There were massive video screens and you could hear the show probably 10 blocks away anyway.

The stage seemed to be one massive ad for the new W Hotel Residences that are opening on Hollywood Blvd. Also, video screen projections of random kung fu movies and other strange images.

The show was not terribly long....7 songs. But it was free and it was fun. DM is coming back soon to play 2 nights at the Hollywood Bowl. I am afraid that it will be heavy with their new album (makes sense), so while I will will likely wind up going, not sure how great of a show it will be. The new album is not very strong. and doesn't seem to have much growing power.

            Songs:

            1. Wrong
            2. Personal Jesus
            3. Walking in My Shoes
            4. Come Back
            5. Peace
            6. Enjoy The Silence
            7. Never Let Me Down Again

At one point in the show, they showed some folks off to the side of the stage....one of them was Chris Martin from Coldplay. The crowd cheered quite a bit for him.

After the show, everyone milled around because the Hollywood and Vine redline was packed. I was trying to find a TV to watch the end of the Lakers game. I was able to catch the last 2 or so minutes, which, as it turns out, was really the best part of the game. Exciting ending.

Anyway, there it is. A fun evening.
