It's really worth watching, and probably teaches us something important.

I don't know what it is supposed to teach. That we should be amazed when unattractive people have talents? Why shouldn't she have a great voice? Why are we surprised?

I find the "before and after" reactions of the audience and the panel of "judges" striking.

OK. I thought the clip was delightful and a good reminder not to "judge a book by its cover." It's not so much that she is not gorgeous by the usual standards, it's that she doesn't look or sound like what we expect a talented vocalist to look or sound like.

I enjoyed the clip a lot, and don't understand Levin's criticism or that of others in an earlier thread. I suppose I should be living on a higher plane, but I often have preconceptions about someone stepping out onto a stage. Ms. Boyle doesn't fit the usual contestant profile (they're usually tarted up--Ms. Boyle made no attempt whatever to go glam--not even an eyebrow trim); she said she aspired to be like Elaine Paige, but initially that seems as likely as my aspirations to be like Pierce Brosnan. And while she may not be a pro just yet, for an unemployed charity worker who had never performed before (if the story is correct), what comes out of her mouth is quite extraordinary. I may have a shot at a Bond film after all.

That was fantastic. She was shockingly good. Here is a question, if this was on radio, and you had only heard her vocie? what would your reaction be when you saw her for the firast time? would it diminish your opinion of her talnet?

reminds me of a trio of sisters that were popular in fascist Italy called the Trio Lescano. TV didn't exist and their only national performances were on the radio. After the war, one of them decided to get married and quit the group. They substituted her with another girl whose voice was similar enough. Since nobody had really seen them perform they kept the same name and she pretended she was a sister. Nobody was the wiser.

Today was her semifinal round in Britain's Got Talent and after cracking in the first line, she aced "Memory." Amazing set of pipes. Eat your heart out, Sarah Brightman.

I stand by my assessment that if she weren't hideous she'd be receiving no publicity at all. With a bunch of training she should be able to make a living off Broadway among similarly talented individuals. Of course, due to her overhype she'll probably sell a few albums before she gets on with that.

I'm not sure if the frustration is from all the pressure to perform and the unbelievable attention she is getting or just because she has never had sex.
