  • Favorite records by bands/artists that only put out one album?

My dad turned me onto this band called Ambulance Ltd. a few weeks ago. They put out a record in 2004 that I never heard, and I've been listening to it a bit lately. Despite showing quite a bit of promise, they have yet to release another album. Then today I heard The Postal Service on the radio while I was driving and these two events got me thinking about the strange world of bands/artists who put out a record I really liked and never did anything again. Here are some that crossed my mind...

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols by The Sex Pistols -- I think this is probably the first one most people would think of.

Anytown Graffiti by Pela -- Really loved this record and was quite disappointed when things fell apart for them trying to record their second album. I also somehow managed to see them 3 times in a career that lasted just one album.

S/T by The Good, The Bad & The Queen -- A supergroup formed by Damon Albarn with guys from The Clash, The Verve and Fela Kuti. This record had some real gems and the band keeps promising to get something else out, but so far no dice. Maybe Damon just got carried away with Gorillaz.

Give Up by The Postal Service -- These guys talked for years about a follow up, and even promised more involvement from Jenny Lewis. But, last I heard, they probably won't be doing another record. Too bad, because this is the only album where I've been able to listen to Gibbard top-to-bottom (and trust me, I've tried, because I always try and support local guys).

Grace by Jeff Buckley -- One of my favorite records ever, and given that he seemed to share some of his father's tendencies, I'm guessing he would have gone to some odd and exciting places. Tragic.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hil -- This thing was absolutely huge when it came out in the late 90s and really terrific. Since then, nothing from Lauryn.

Since I Left You by The Avalanches -- One of those records that along with Paul's Boutique and ...Endtroducing is a watershed in sampling. I would really love to hear something else from these guys, and while they keep promising a follow up, it's been 11 years since this record.

S/T by The La's -- Some great early Brit-pop and the album that contained the much-loved and covered There She Goes. Never made an album again after their successful debut.

What else? I think several Clapton projects only lasted one album, right? I'm pretty sure both Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominoes only did one. Again, I'm thinking just one studio record. Some of these bands listed above released b-side and unreleased compilations, live reinterpretations, or soundtracks and the like, but only one studio LP.

    Your favorites?

I'm never really surprised by the records I haven't heard. There's just too much out there. At the end of every year I'm always disappointed by the number of records I didn't get too. Though this year I've made a conscious effort to cut back -- I'll be shocked if I get to 50 this year.

surprised because that disc specifically was a Pitchfork fave. Along with Magnetic Fields (i) and a few others. I made a mix of those discs and listened to them over and over while MMM was in the hospital and I was at home painting the nursery or just generally freaking out by myself. anyway, i remember late 2004 and that Ambulance disc brings back memories. It is the one with the vertical stripes on the cover?

I had never heard of Pitchfork in '04 -- at that point my internet use was still pretty limited, and in terms of recreational stuff I'm guessing the only sites I ever really accessed were cougarboard and jazzhoops. But even now, I can still only get to a fraction of the stuff they recommend. There's just too much good music to hear, you know?

I did just check p'fork to read their review of the record because I was curious and couldn't seem to find it. Also not really sure what the cover looks like -- never seen it.

Lots of punk bands only released one album - The Germs, Sex Pistols, Pylon, X-Ray Spex, etc. The La's also only released one album.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill really was a great album. It put it right there in a string of great soul albums that came out during that time period, and then basically the genre died.

The Phantom Chords . Actually I think they may have not even released an album. It was ready but the record company didn't release it. Cool mix of punk and rockabilly. The Loveless and the Damned is an amazing song.
