    Indulgent Rubbish

First, apologies to PAC if I'm stepping on his toes, but I've been meaning to bring this up anyway. Among my least favorite songs? Tributes to the singer's hometown.

Topping the list is Faith Hill's "Star, Mississippi" followed closely by Gretchen Wilson singing about being "Pocahontas (IL) Proud." I can think of few entertainment moments worse than in a concert when a singer starts singing about her hometown, video montage and all, and the attendees get to pretend its a privilege to view.

I wish anyone contemplating doing this had to endure a Simon Cowell critique telling him/her whether the song has any redeeming qualities outside of nostalgia for a small group of people.

    More:
Kenny Chesney singing about where he came from & being a Tennessee-an
Bruce Springsteen & either his hometown or the USA

    "I Love L.A."

    "New York, New York"

But, when you're from somewhere you love and someone sings about it, a la Ray Charles, "Georgia on my Mind," well that makes me happy. Are there any "I LOVE UTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" type songs?

Perhaps if you two complainers took the time to listen to "America Rocks" by Orrin Hatch, you would change your carpy tune.

If you see my happy feet, just can't keep still. It's because a good parade and a band can give me a thrill!

I did that from memory. Not even lying.

You are missing the point of Randy Newman's song, I think. It is not a paean to Los Angeles.

Paean shows up about once a week in my crossword puzzles. It allows me to feel good about myself when the sage ape uses it in a sentence and I know what it means.

I have no doubt one would not lie about such a thing.

Perhaps you should listen to a different genre of music. I've never listened, but my guess would be that there are no "hometown pride" songs in death metal.
