    Big Movie Stars Suck vs. Those Who Don't Suck

    I was flipping through the channels the other night when I came across The Mexican, starring Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. That must have sounded really cool to the studio execs, a film starring both Pitt AND Roberts? Awesome!

    But to me, either one of those actors sends up warning flag, and both in a single film (I'm looking at YOU Ocean's Eleven!), is almost a guaranteed pass. There are just some movie stars out there who suck, in spite of their huge success.

    On the other hand, there are a few big movie stars that are really interesting, and whose work will consistently draw my attention to any film in which they appear. Tommy Lee Jones is an example, and so is George Clooney (I'm looking at YOU Ocean's Eleven!).

    So what big-time movie stars suck, and which one's deserve their status? Format your answer as follows:

      Count me as a Pitt fan. I liked that for a period of time he seemed to shun the typical good looking dude roles, and instead opted for stuff that was a bit edgier like Seven, Fight Club and Snatch. After that run of movies he seemed to turn to the bigger blockbuster stuff like Troy, Ocean's (though I still like him in this one) and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Overall I still like him and thought he was hilarious in Burn After Reading.

      Doesn't Suck:

      Julia Roberts

                  The main reason with me that Clooney does not suck is totally unrelated to movies. When he was still a struggling actor (pre ER), he was living in some place with a buddy of his. This buddy had a cat that they kept inside, so it had a litterbox. Clooney started secretly scooping up the turds the cat would leave in the box and his buddy started thinking that his cat had a major problem. After doing this for about two weeks, Clooney squats over the cat litter box and takes a huge dump into it and carefully puts some of the cat litter over the top of it to simulate the cat burying the turd. I thought that was hilarious.

                  Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                          I know it's cliche but there's one actor where it seems what ever movie he is in,,,even if the movie sucks, that he's a great actor and that is Denzel Washington.

                          Whenever Training Day is on TV I can't change the channel because he is so good in that movie.

                          I also enjoy his back n forth showdowns with Gene Hackman in Crimson Tide.

                              Brad Pitt is a solid actor. How can you not love his performances in 12 Monkeys and Burn after Reading? Dude is NOT just a pretty boy.

                                          George Clooney is a great Leading Man. I think Javier Bardem will eventually eclipse Clooney, but hasn't yet.

                                              The "Batman Voice" firmly puts Christian Bale in the sucks column. My brother started busted out laughing towards the end of The Dark Knight when Bale said something like "you belong in jail" in the Batman Voice.

                                              DiCaprio is firmly in the do not suck column because of Blood Diamond and the Departed.

                                              Ben Affleck is firmly in the totally sucks ass column. How could you equivocate on that one? This is the guy who was in Jersey Girl, Gigli and Daredevil, he's terrible. Strangely enough, his brother kind of kicks ass and has been in a string of good films. If you would have told me that Casey Affleck would eventually become somewhat of a respectible actor and that his brother would be a punchline 10 years ago, I would have laughed. It couldn't have been stranger if Frank Stallone had overtaken Sly in the 80s.
