Radiohead debuts new song "Staircase" in preview of BBC's From The Basement

Adding to its growing status as an ongoing mixed-media project, Radiohead has recorded a live session of The King of Limbs in its entirety plus additional tracks for the Nigel Godrich BBC series, From The Basement. You can check out a preview of the performance below in the synth-heavy, percussive, appropriately shadowy new song "Staircase" in anticipation of its July 1 premiere. The video features a loose and upbeat Thom Yorke—though he’s not quite at his "Lotus Flower" (or "Single Ladies") dancing peak—as well as assistance from Clive Deamer, drummer for Portishead and Robert Plant’s backing band The Strange Sensation. Watching these songs transform from Thom's solo renditions into full band arrangments has been interesting, and this is yet another that didn't end up sounding anything like what I had envisioned (the melodies -- especially in the vocals -- are drawn back in favor of the grooves/rhythm -- but that seems to be the order of the day right now). I like it, but you certainly hear echoes of other stuff in it, like Lotus Flower, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi and the looped drum style of much of TKOL. I really like the addition of the 2nd drummer, and it will be interesting to see him play with Radiohead on some of these other Radiohead cuts that really have the polyrhythms going.

They will also be premiering Daily Mail when FTB airs, and I'm a bit nervous about that. It was one of my very favorites in Thom solo form, so I'm excited to hear it but worried I may have put too much expectation on it. So far I've been very pleased by all the songs I had zero expectation for (Morning Mr. Magpie, Supercollider) and not exceptionally pleased by the stuff I had the highest hopes for (like GUTG, which is my least favorite song on TKOL). Expectations can be such a bitch.

Just watched that 36 musicians play Radiohead video on youtube and it is so cool. Someone cobbled together youtube clips of people playing Paranoid Android and brought them together in one video.

It was posted after the airing in Spain, but it kept getting pulled by the next broadcaster with rights to air. The sound quality of this video isn't the best, but oh well. I'm happy to report that I'm thrilled by the way this thing turned out. I was a bit worried they'd overthink the arrangment on this one instead of just letting it be what it is, but they went straight-forward on it which is exactly what they should have done. It's got great chords, a great melody, great vocals, etc., and it can stand on its own without a clever arrangment (which I would contrast with MMM, which is not terribly great on its own terms but is evelated by the album arrangement). My biggest fear is that they would strip out the climax in this thing and Thom would draw back on the vocals (since that became the big trend with most songs in the TKOL era), and thankfully they didn't do that because those are the elements that made this song great to begin with. IDK, really love this one. The brass getting layered in through the piano bridge and then through the climax, Thom really letting it go on the vocals, Jonny and Ed doing the call and response thing on and off the beat, another great bassline from Coz, etc. I have a really great quality MP3 of this thing I've been listening to it incessantly. Certainly not something we haven't heard before from them as the structure is fairly similar to You and Whose Army? and has sort of an Amnesiac-by-way-of-HTTT feel (and is probably from that era -- in terms of public knowledge of the song it dates to the In Rainbows blackboard, so I thing we can assume it predates those sessions as well), but I don't give a shit, it's a great tune.

I thought that the first time I heard it as well, though now I kind of like the duration there at the back end. Leaves me wanting more, so I immediately play it again.

I listened to this thing like 10 times in a row now. Such a great song. Radiohead, more than any other band, seems to have so many great song that don't end up fitting with an album. Thankfully they usually get them out somehow.

Then it becamse the basis for the There Will Be Blood soundtrack and was talked about even more, so everyone is quite familiar with it already. Here's another Ross piece where he talked about Popcorn and Blood.
