  • The Cool Hand Luke thread

This is the only movie that just myself and my father went to together. I was eight or nine at the time and I remember thinking it was really a great movie but most of all how cool it was that my Dad would take me to such a grown up movie. In contrast the only movie I remember just myself and my mother going to was Mary Poppins but for a four or five year old that was pretty cool also.

Cool Hand Luke was the first movie I purchased on DVD (or in any other format). It is probably the film I have watched more times than any other. In my book, Luke epitomizes the best of manliness.

A buddy in high school was obsessed with this movie. He tried to recreate the hard boiled egg scene. He puked on the 14th egg. We filmed the whole thing and watched the hilarity over and over. Good times.

I watched it with my wife so she could learn how to properly wash a car.

Luciiiiiiillllle! Lord, whatever I done, don't strike me blind for another couple of minutes.

I saw it in high school with my pals, little knowing what we were in for. Really a fine viewing experience, with so many memorable lines and great character actors (Strother Martin!).

I went out and bought some mirrored sunglasses soon thereafter.

That's great. Unfortunately, I can't express the desire to sample her wares without sounding lecherous.

That was just cruel, man. I had visions of her in an apron and bakers hat and nothing else.

Instead I get cupcakes. Real cupcakes.

Using that line has been banned (by my spouse) in my house. Probably was over used. My kids still get a kick when I break into a tirade explaining our house rules...
Any boy leaves his dirty socks on the couch spends a night in the box. Any kid leaves their dirty dishes and crumbs on the counter gets a night in the box. Anyone who loses the TV remote or doesn't put the phone back on the jack spends a night in the box.

So Dad, what's a night in the box really mean?

Just trying to help you kids out - a night in the box is banishment to your room by your mother with lights out and no electronics. You make enough messes or mistakes and you gotta deal with Mom. And she is one rough 'ol gal.

Cool Hand Luke and The Graduate came out in the same year. 1967 was a good year for film.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger were fantastic in "In the Heat of the Night", so that is a tough sell. "They call me MISTER Tibbs!" Also the Academy Awards were a few days after Rev. King was murdered.

Newman was very, very good though.
