  • James River: D'Angelo's 3rd album thread

MarkGrace has the Radiohead LP thread. Sizzle has the Hot Sauce Committee thread. Now, I'm starting the D'Angelo 3rd album thread.

It is likely that this album will never be released, but damnit I can hope.

The latest news on the album:

Since my last post i have continued sessions with D'Angelo. we've just finished up 5 months of recording. D has been doing vocals and guitars and we've had Pino Palladino back in for some more bass tracks. Also ?uestlove came in to jam with D and Pino. they've finally reunited after 7 or 8 years (lost track how long really). we're taking a few months break while i take care of some other projects that have been on the back burner.

Back burner and D'Angelo could mean another 3-4 year delay. Here is hoping the album will still happen someday.

I'm somewhat convinced that it would make as much sense for me to start a thread dedicated to John Coltrane's next album as to James River.

I was just thinking about D'Angelo the other day and wondering if he was done. I have been a pretty casual listener of his, but what I have heard has been really quite impressive. I hope this third album sees the light of day and soon.

IMO, Voodoo is the best soul album of all time. D'Angelo killed it on that album. Brown Sugar is also a really good album and right up there with the best soul albums of all time. The guy has serious talent and he could have been his generations Marvin Gaye, but he was more interested in smoking weed and doing cocaine than making music.

Well sometimes you have got to enjoy the fruits of your labors, right?

I will have to give Voodoo a deeper listen to see if I agree.

It is well worth going back and listening to. Tons of great artists worked on the album. My favorite tracks are the tracks with Charlie Hunter's guitar work. Spanish Joint is my favorite track from that album.

Brown Sugar has got to be one of my all-time most played albums. I actually prefer it to Voodoo, but the nostalgia and "era feel" of Brown Sugar for me contribute to that.

I really enjoy Brown Sugar a lot and I also like that nostalgia feel of it, but it just doesn't stand up to Voodoo, IMO.

              Voodoo = Blowout Comb
              Brown Sugar = Reachin'

Also, I do recommend picking up Live at the Jazz Cafe. Great live album.

I didn't see this one before. It is 4 months old, but it is still news. Still skeptical.

D'Angelo is also doing a mini European tour.

News on James River, but not really news that gets me excited about the direction he may go. Nice to see that someone is trying to push him to get something done. I guess if a change of direction is what it takes to get another album out, at least there is chance that he puts out good music again.

I read the spread on D'angelo in GQ. I also love his music-- I have great memories of Brown Sugar...

I don't spend enough time in the Critic's Corner to claim my own thread, but seeing this bump reminded me to check for the latest from Maxwell, hoping there was something new about blackSUMMER'Snight potential release, the follow up to BLACKsummers'night, that has been delayed over and over again. And it looks like Maxwell dropped some not so subtle hints on his Instagram that it will be released on Valentine's Day this year. I'd just kind of quit watching for any news after this comment last year around the time Maxwell had said the album would release for sure:

“I don’t know, I just have so much fun living. It’s like, I just turned 40 and I look at so many performers and so many people who are actually always on time and always have an album out. They don’t have actual lives, in my opinion. I feel like I’m so much more than being famous and meeting a musical quota. And I don’t know, just the weight of the scrutiny and attention is too weird for me. So many times people want you to stay the way you were, be as you were before because they want to encapsulate you in a time so they can remember their youth. But you’re here to continually push forward and move forward. That’s where I’m at — I just want to always surprise people.”

Holy shit, it actually happened. D'Angelo's 3rd album has been released. It's not James River though, it is Black Messiah. I'm looking forward to listening to this.

Not a new album, but at least there wasn't a 14 year wait for new D'Angelo this time. Unshaken released. It was on the Red Dead 2 sound track. It is a great song. Maybe another album in 5 years or so.

Listening a lot to Black Messiah these days. It still isn't Voodoo, but it isn't far off either.
