Amazon announces free unlimited streaming of movies and tv shows for Prime Members

Amazon has apparently announced that Amazon Prime subscribers ($79 a year) will now get access to free and unlimited streaming of over 5,000 movies and videos from Amazon's Video On Demand market. I'm not sure what percent of Amazon's total video library that represents.

Its about time someone steps up to compete with Netflix's streaming model. At $79 a year, that's less than $7 a month for all that streaming, plus free two-day shipping on almost everything from Amazon. Roku has already announced that it the new unlimited streaming feature works with its boxes.

    Woohoo! Hurray for me.

Darn, I wish my new AppleTV supported Amazon VOD.

Do your kids have an xbox? The solution is not as elegant as Roku or Apple (if it had a solution), but I think this would work.

Whoops, only paid $79 memberships get you free VOD. You just get free 2 day shipping with these two kinds of Prime Memberships.

The $79 is a great deal though regardless.

Yeah, but I want to watch in my other room also. Might be time to pick up a Roku. Or one of those Amazon VOD-enabled blu-ray players.

I have been doing Amazon Prime for years. I order enough stuff there that it seems well worth the money.

I've paid before until they launched the free memberships. I took a class through the local college last summer and used that email. When it expires I'll likely pay the $79 as I have in years past. Now do I cancel Netflix? It's been awhile since I have used the DVD in the mail.

Why haven't you reduced your membership to the streaming only plan yet? $8.99 a month, I think. Maybe $7.99.

The one thing Netflix has on it is the Starz package. That gives them a big library of pretty decent films.

Laziness really. We used to get one about once a week. That's down to once a month now. Basketball season really cuts into my movie viewing. Between college and NBA I am watching a game or two every night.

Hold the phone. Only a limited subset of the Amazon library is available through this offer. Looks very limited.
