International Hip Hop

Over the years I've come across a ton of really exceptional international hip hop but never really paid close enough attention to remember bands. The only one I had extended exposure to was the French IAM which does some great stuff.

So I'm opening it up here for recommendations. I've heard great stuff from Germany, France, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco and the UK but I only remember a few names.

So who knows and what should I listen to?

the israeli hip hop scene is really active. even if you don't speak hebrew, it's great to listen to and it's a language that does really well with flow and rhythm. my favorite artist is subliminal (check out the album "don't give a shit" if you can find it), but he's a bit of a political hardliner and is not for everyone. also check shi 360 and ha'tzel. there are some palestinian sympathizing folks like sagol and even arab-israeli artists like tamer nafar if you're into that, but i've never really been a fan.

I really like Mattafix they have a cool sound. Big City Life is a great song.

I also enjoy Roots Manuva.

Then you can stick with the staple Slick Rick who is not a US citizen.

Yeah, same. Only int'l "hip-hop" artists I really know are those that come from the various UK strains of hip-hop.

I'm not really a hip hop or rap fan. I appreciate the talents of rap musicians, it just doesn't speak to me.

That said, for pedagogical reasons I have found rap to be a good way to get students interested in studying Italian language and culture. I've found this site to be helpful in learning more about Italian rap, which in my opinion is pretty good and surprisingly catchy.

I have found international Hip Hop to be generally gawd-awful. With the exception of a handful of artists from the UK and a sprinkle of DJs/B-Boys from Japan, people from other cultures generally just don't get it-- it comes off too PBS after-school-special to be real. I'm looking at you in particular, Central/South America!
