I know this movie has been mentioned int he movie I just saw thread, but I enjoyed it so much I wanted to dedicate a thread to it. I heartily recommend this movie. Very, very well done. Firth is fantastic as his stammer is so convincing you want to help him, it is painful, at times

Wallis Simpson is an interesting figure in history. Here she is portrayed very unfavorably as seen through the eyes of royalty. It was a very unflattering portrayal.

I thought it was sort of amusing, however, when the music during the big speech, which is about WWII, was accompanied by music by a German composer, although the music is sublime (one of my favorite pieces; from Beethoven's 7th)

It also seemed like the Prince/King wore the same shirt/tie combo in too many scenes.

But these are such inconsequential nits. ON balance, this was a fantastic film.

I thought it was incredible, to the point that I was emotional during the speech scene at the end. Fantastic!

This is good to hear. I saw the trailer and really wanted to see it but thought it'd be something danimal would have no interest in... Though creekster's wardrobe comment is shining a light on a side of him I never knew existed.

When I first heard about this movie, I thought it would be something I would have no interest in either. But the reviews convinced me to go and I'm glad because it's become one of my favorites of the year and one of those movies I recommend to everybody who complains that there's nothing good out right now.

Same. Period piece looking thing with British actor and costumes everyone was going to rave about. Pass!

But the good buzz here, along with the fact that it's a best picture shoo-in, has convinced me that I need to see it.

Completely agree, except for the wardrobe (I didn't notice). As for the music, maybe that was an ironic nod to the House of Windsor being formerly known as the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Queen Victoria was Kaiser Wilhelm's grandma, after all, and the lead character in the movie chose to be known as King George VI because "Albert" sounded too Germanic. Was someone making a little joke?

All that nonense aside, it is a great movie. The stammer is indeed painful. The Geoffrey Rush character is one you want to have lunch with.

Finally saw this tonight. I thought it was a fabulously crafted piece of dramatic cinema. It's hard to not feel for the character played so compellingly by Colin Firth. It was strange to see Helena Bonham Carter playing such a sedate, sweet role after her typically wacky ones.

Anyway, it's a good one.

In my view, the film was much more about an individual overcoming personal and psychological demons and the power of meaningful friendship. The aristocracy stuff was actually fairly understated. I cared about Colin Firth's character as an individual, not as the Duke of York.

This must make it a little hard for you to find movies to watch. By this reasoning I guess you don't go to films about nazis, tyrants, evil kings, zombies, mean or dangerous people, people with reprehensible morals, and so forth.

I like movies about bad kings and dictators. More troubling are ones that flatter them.
