  • 83rd Academy Awards (2/27/11)

So I know BoylenOver and a few others have started posting predictions about this year's Academy Awards in a few different threads, so I figured we should have one dedicated to this year's Oscars so we can see them all in one place.

Nominations will be announced next Tuesday the 25th and the ceremony itself is on Sunday, February 27th. So post all your predictions, comments and gripes here!

Here are my predictions for a few of the major categories:

    Best Picture
I'll be very surprised if the 10 nominees don't look very much like this--
    • True Grit
    • Black Swan
    • The King's Speech
    • The Fighter
    • Toy Story 3
    • 127 Hours
    • Inception
    • Winter's Bone
    • The Kids Are All Right
    • The Social Network

It's conceivable that Rabbit Hole or Blue Valentine could make it in, but I don't think they will. I am pretty happy about the fact that all of the front runners I listed are movies I actually enjoyed this year and am pleased they are getting the recognition that they have thus far.

    Best Director
    • Tom Hooper (King's Speech)
    • Coen Bros. (True Grit)
    • David Fincher (Social Network)
    • Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan)
    • Christopher Nolan (Inception)

Yep, all white males, even though two of the probable Best Picture nominees (Kids and Winter's Bone) were directed by women.

I admit, these are the safest of safe bets. Who is predicting some huge surprises or upsets?

And before anyone else says it, yes, yes, I know the Oscars are big, bloated, self-important hogwash, that politics and sentiment often win out over quality and that it's a questionable practice to try to give out awards for art anyway. But that don't mean it ain't fun!
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I saw Social Network last night. It was very good. The girl that plays the girlfriend in the beginning of the movie who Zuckerberg later tries to contact is going to play Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's versions of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. This girl's name is Rooney Mara.

Think about that name for a bit...

...her parents come respectively from the families that own the New York Giants (father is the son or grandson of Wellington Mara) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (mother is, I believe, a daughter or granddaughter of Art Rooney).
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Her sister, Kate Mara, is a much better... uh... actor.

So I've read, and mentioned in another thread, that The Town is making a big push and could end up squeezing out something like 127 Hours. I hope 127 Hours makes the field, as it was one of my very favorites this year -- I'd rather see something like TS3 get the squeeze.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

          Best Picture: The Social Network
          Best Actor: Colin Firth
          Best Actress: Natalie Portman
          Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale
          Best Supporting Actress: Mellissa Leo
          Best Director: David Fincher
          Best Documentary: Waiting for Superman
          Best Animanted: TS3
Best Original Screenplay: The King's Speech
          Best Adapted Screenplay: Alan Sorkin

Those are not my picks, but my impression of who will win based on what I've read thus far.

So you'd rank The Town higher on your year end list than Toy Story 3? Interesting. Incorrect, but interesting.

Those would be my bets as well except that I think Julianne Moore will be the front runner for Best Supporting Actress. Also, I don't know In a Better World. Has it had a U.S. release yet? The funny thing is, the best foreign movies released in the U.S. this year were actually 2009 releases in their native countries, like Mother and A Prophet.

Yes, I posted my year-end list in the 127 Hours thread, and had The Town at third -- obviously I'd love for it to get a nom, and since I just don't like animation I would bump TS3 (which I haven't seen and won't).

Is there a "best of 2010" thread already where everyone can post their best movies of the year?

I thoroughly enjoyed The Town and love to see Jeremy Renner getting recognition, but I didn't think the movie did anything to elevate it beyond being simply a very good genre flick.

Must be genetic. I was talking to my old man the other day and telling him how I just can't sit through animation. He laughed because he said he's the exact same way. Seriously, I bet I've made it through two animated features in the last ten years (Up and Ratatouille).

Woot posted a favorites list in his 127 Hours thread, so I did the same.

I'm somewhat the same, but I did really enjoy the first two Toy Story flicks (the 3rd was a marginal thumbs up but not close to the other two; I'm baffled that it seems to be getting more awards buzz than the others did). I'd also give a marginal thumbs up to a few others like Wall-E and Up, but for the most part I find them altogether too cutesy and insubstantial.

It's because you don't have kids. I couldn't sit through animated movies before I had kids. Now I watch them through their eyes and get a kick out of the things they find funny or sad or scary. It makes me enjoy them more.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

The first two Toy Story movies, plus Finding Nemo and The Incredibles are in Pixar's greatest... but that's another thread.
