I think this is what I have been using thus far. It has worked for me but wanted to make sure there werent others out there that might be better.

have you resolved the chapters issue yet?

Last night I did what others suggested and ripped a dvd to a folder using dvdfab and then converted it to mpeg using handbrake and including chapters. I went to bed after I started it, so I don't know whether it worked or not.

I am puzzled why a software such as DVD fab that costs a load of money (legal back up copies are free, of course) would not provide such basic functionality. Makes no sense to me.

when you rip with DVD fab, does it result in one big file, sans chapters? How do you subsequently insert the chapters with handbrake if the source file from DVDfab has no chapters?

When I rip it under this scenario, I just rip it to a folder, which is to say its basically just the same video_ts and audio_ts you'd find if you popped your dvd into your computer and explored its contents. But now its in a folder on my computer instead of on a disc. Same size as the original, chapters intact, just lacking DRM.

You can then use that folder as your source material in handbrake which can utilize the chapters that are still in the source.

I believe there's an option called "rip to folder" or something like that. It might be under DVD to DVD instead of DVD to mobile (or DVD ripping, I think its called in DVDFAB8). It doesn't compress the file at all, unlike when you do the DVD to ipad option. It just takes the exact same files and folders found on the disc and moves them to a folder on your computer. It becomes basically an exact copy of the dvd.

Odds are, however, that you've got these files on your computer when you do the ipad conversion, you just don't know it. Go look in My Documents (or Documents)/DVDFAB8/Temp/Full Disc (or maybe Main Movie) and you'll probably find a bunch of folders named after the movies you've already ripped. Inside each movie folder should be two folders: video_ts and audio_ts. Those are the two folders that a DVD player accesses to play the move (more or less).

Once you've found those, go into handbrake and click "source." Navigate to Document/DVDFAB8/Temp or whatever and select the MOVIE folder (not the video_ts or audio_ts folders inside the movie folder) and click okay. Handbrake will then use the folder as its source instead of the DVD in your computer's drive. Then you can proceed just like you would with a normal DVD.
