This film was recommended to me by a friend way back in July. It made its way to the top of my Netlix queue last week and was a pleasant surprise. It's a comedy set on City Island, NY which apparently is technically a part of the Bronx. It stars Andy Garcia as a blue collar prison guard and Julianna Margulies as his wife. The plot had great potential to be a huge cliche. Dysfunctional family encounters life changing event and though they don't cope ideally, they figure out that they all love each other. But City Island pulls it off with what I felt was a great script.
It's a funny film and I felt it was quite well cast. The teenage son kind of steals the show in his brief appearances but every character is solid. In addition to a great script, the cinematography was excellent. From the beautiful NYC skylines to shots of the neighborhoods, shores, and yachts of City Island I found myself enjoying a tour of a place I didn't know existed almost as much as the story itself.
In short, it's well worth a rental. If your Netflix queue is suffering from monotony this could be a nice change of pace.
