  • Top Gear (UK version)

I am officially hooked on this show and strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys looking at some of the finer things in life. Even if you're not really a car guy (I am not) the show is engrossing because it is beautifully shot, the hosts are very knowledgable, and the hosts are very naturally funny. It is also a show that lends itself very well to a big screen television becoming almost a work of art unto itself.

I've had this show recommended to me in the past and frankly it just didn't sound that interesting. But in the past couple of weeks I've happened upon it and have really become a fan. Past seasons (beginning with season 9 for some odd reason) are available to stream on Netflix and tonight on BBC America they are airing a Top Gear marathon. If you give it a chance tonight, I'd wager you'll be hooked by morning.

Note: do not confuse this show with the US version. If the announcers aren't British then you're not watching the right show. I understand that the U.S. version is a poor substitute.

Very funny show. I've seen many episodes and I"ll admit that I loved the show and watched it quite a bit over the past couple years. The biggest highlight for me was watched Brian Johnson (not that one Ute fans) race around the track in the crappy sedan they all have to drive. Good times.

The humor has faded a bit for me. I think the scripted nature of most of the stunts kind of wore on me to the point where I could almost predict what would happen next.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Is it safe to assume that Jay Leno stole the idea of guests racing a lap and then posting their times from Top Gear?

If Jay Leno does that then it would be safe to say that. Thankfully I'm not over 50 years old so I have no idea what Jay Leno does.

I really like that show. In fact, I just watched the segments in which they tried to kill a Toyota Hilux while I was eating lunch today. You have to love the ideas they come up with. I mean, who thinks about making a space shuttle out of a Reliant Robin, testing to see what the best car for toupee wearers is, or building homemade stretch limos?
          Not that, sickos.

The best one I've seen so far is from season 9 (no coincidence that's the only season I've really seen so far) when they each have to buy a car in Miami for $1k or less and then drive it to New Orleans. At one point they had to each paint something on the other's cars that might get them beat up in the deep south. One painted a giant pink "Man Love Rules" and another a simple "Nascar Sucks". At one point they had a mob forming to kick their asses. Lots of that show is scripted but I got the sense that this was not one of those moments. It prompted one of the hosts to declare once safely back in the studio that he was convinced that in parts of the deep south Americans had begun mating with vegetables.

In an interview they did, they said that they could hear the guys following them coordinating with people ahead of them over their CB radios. That's why they had to pull over and clean off their cars really quick--they were trying to not be identified by the rednecks ahead.

The real Top Gear is truly world famous and a great show. FWIW, the american version is decent and worth a watch. Though it is really too bad...an american version of Top Gear had been in the works for years with Adam Carolla headlining it. The first pilot was not picked up (though reportedly it was really good) and Carolla was not available on the next try and the new american one is Carolla-less. Its too bad, the american version with Carolla would have been much better than what is on tv right now. Oh well...I will still watch both though whenever I run across it.
