  • Vampire Weekend and ad jingle over-exposure

Their "Holiday" song is now running on at least three commercials including this Tommy Hilfiger ad that's running in every single New York City cab.

And on a related note - Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down" is now being heard on (a) ads for True Grit, (b) ads for ESPN's 30/30 doc and (c) Jeep commercials.

Saw these guys at Red Butte last night. Anybody else there?

Pretty good show -- lead singer was a little bit flat on a couple of songs.

My wife is wishing we would have named one of our boys Ezra.

Blacks Keys were on every single commercial for about a year solid. It's the new reality now that records don't sell.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

When we were doing the last mixtape exchange I couldn't decide what theme to go with. I ultimately went with bands from southern California but the runner up was songs featured on commercials.

Better be careful, Art is going to steal these ideas for his next themed mixtape!

As an aside, I've got no problems with the commercial thing. I read an interview with the Keys talking about how early in their career they turned down 100k for a commercial because they didn't want to be "sellouts." They were totally broke travelling across the country in a shitty van, playing small club shows, and living off fast food, and they finally looked at each other and said "this is fucking stupid." They figured they'd never get played on the radio (obviously were wrong about that, but this didn't come until several years later) and nobody was buying records because they were in the illegal download era, so if someone wanted to pay them for their music, why the hell not?

They did a few commercials, had a song picked up as the theme to a TV show (Hung, I think?), and said for them that was almost like the equivalent of radio play, because they had people show up to their shows recognizing specific songs. They said this was one of the big things that really helped launched them.
