Indie rock is the new alternative rock

Do you remember when "Grunge" and "Alternative Rock" hit the scene in the late 80s/early 90s and became the "it" thing. By the mid 90s alternative basically morphed into mainstream rock and gave us horrible bands like Candlebox, Matchbox 20 and Creed. I think the same thing has happened with "indie rock." I first heard the term indie rock in the 90s associated with bands like Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, etc. Now its turned into stale hipsters playing a watered down version of it. I guess its the logical progression of trends in music. I keep racking my brain about the last album that I thought was groundbreaking and blew me away in the indie scene. Maybe Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights? Its probably just a matter of me getting old but I'm not finding a lot of new stuff to get excited about. There has to be something going on but I'm not hip enough to recognize it.

At any rate I find myself discovering underground bands from the 70s to excite me lately and when I get bored I go back to my shoegaze or lo-fi days. So to the more hip of you out there, whats exciting now?

Indie was basically a reference to independent record labels. Most of today's popular "indie" bands aren't in that category. Also, as more bands proliferate on the web, the term "indie" will carry less and less significance.

Someone a few weeks ago referred to Muse as an "indie" band.

"Indie" is not a term that means anything to me at this point -- when people describe music as "indie," I generally have no idea what they are talking about.

But I think there's a whole other discussion here and unfortunately I have to take off right now.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I usually don't have the energy for this discussion.

I realize the use of the term "indie rock" is not used in the correct context from which it derived. I find the term's misuse annoying as well (although I'm guilty of it here). But for better or worse it has morphed into an umbrella term for modern non-pop rock. My intentions were to vent and note (for me at least):

1 - The "indie" scene has now morphed into the mainstream much like alternative music did in the 90s.

2 - I haven't heard anything lately that has me excited

3 - what is the new stuff out there that is exciting you?

This looks like something I will actually like. I may have to break my streak of close to 6 years since I last paid to watch a movie in a theater, especially if it's a CUFer screening.
