Has anyone seen this yet? I hope some people make a point to check it out as it is one of the best films I've seen this year and definitely worthy of discussion. It's a documentary about a young guy in Manhattan whose online relationship with a family in Michigan takes some surprising turns. I know people get told all the time to go into movies knowing as little as possible beforehand, but this film totally merits that admonition.

Do yourself a favor--don't read anything about it and just go see it. It's a pretty fascinating piece of filmmaking.

By the way, Utah residents: It's playing out in West Jordan at the Jordan Landing.

Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I have to admit that the trailer for this one totally got me. That thing made me file like I had to see what happened at the end.

I'm planning on checking it out.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Nooooooo!!!! I know the piece you're talking about and yes, that would be a complete spoiler. The movie is still pretty ingeniously constructed and worth catching at some point though.

Are you convinced the story is real and not contrived or altered in some fashion? I haven't seen the movie, but given the amount of buzz about a film that purportedly was begun simply to document a rather banal social connection, I'm a little skeptical.

Well, in answer to your question, I've watched a lot of documentaries and I promise you that those two things are not mutually exclusive. Every documentary, no matter how "true" the story, has been altered or contrived in some manner and it's smart to be skeptical of any claims otherwise. Having said that, I have my opinions about the veracity of the story presented in the film and I have reasons for my opinions but I'll wait to go into them until more people have actually seen it. Let me just say that you shouldn't let anything you've heard dissuade you from seeing the film.

I watched a trailer on YouTube and it specifically says "Not based on a true story" and "Not inspired by actual events". I, perhaps foolishly, read some of the comments and a lot of people were saying how horrible it is and the twist/spoiler was not worth it at all. I was interested in seeing it though, so good to hear an endorsement.

Well, for one, the comments you mention are followed by the statement "This IS true." So they are definitely claiming that the film is factual. As far as the "twist/spoiler" thing goes, this isn't a movie where you find out Bruce Willis is dead the whole time or anything like that. It's just that it takes some unexpected turns and it would be a shame to have those spoiled beforehand. But yeah, still definitely worth seeing.

I saw this last weekend since it is now On Demand with Xfinity "same day as DVD". The trailer had me thinking the movie was one thing and the movie is something completely different.

                  Spoiler for twist:
I was disappointed that the character was actually sad and somewhat pathetic rather than sinister. I gotta be honest, I was hoping for sinister. I still enjoyed the movie, but it was really an depiction of just how sad and pathetic some people's lives are. Social media has enabled some people to adopt an online fantasy persona and pretend social life and some will go to extreme lengths to preserve this fantasy.

For me the movie was a message for people to maintain and nourish meaningful real life relationships no matter how difficult and trying real life becomes.

                        I enjoyed it.

                        Spoiler for discusses the film:
I think the power of the film, for me, lies in the fact that I could see myself on either side of that equation. I could be Nev, the trusting and unassuming "victim"; and to some extent I could be Angela, the manipulative and imaginitve "perpitrator".

It's also kind of fun that it's "Technology: the movie", with facebook and cell phones and google earth.
