  • Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

I'll be very interested in reading CUFfers' opinions of this movie. We wanted to see a movie last night, and since our votes for Eat, Pray, Love and The Expendables cancelled each other's out, and we'd seen most everything else, we settled on Scott Pilgrim, knowing very little about the film, other than that it was directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) and that it starred Michael Cera.

We enjoyed it, but more because it gave us a glimpse of what appeals to a younger demographic. If you played video games in the early 90's, you'll likely find the movie hilarious. Quick, snappy dialogue with very clever graphics and editing, but I never started caring much for the characters, all of whom are a bunch of slackers, and the fight scenes became a bit tiresome. Rotten Tomatoes sets it at a lofty 80%, and my sense is Gen X and Y'ers will love it. But we're a bit over the hill and didn't fully appreciate what no doubt was a very nicely done film. Still, even for us AARP members, there were several LOL moments.

I'm pretty stoked to see this. It strikes me as the kind of film not everyone is going to like, but I'm pretty sure I will. The riding-a-glorious-LSD-buzz visuals look pretty awesome.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I agree. I am trying to convince Gidget to go see it for our anniversary this week. She wants to see Inception.

I was blown away. I most definitely agree that the film will not appeal to everyone, but man, I really connected with it. It was so endlessly visually inventive that when I wasn't laughing at the characters and dialogue, I was laughing at the sheer audacity of some of the stuff the filmmakers were putting up on the screen.

I especially enjoyed the fact that there was no attempt made to put all of the visual insanity on screen into some kind of believable context, like a dream sequence or something. No, it was more like an old-school musical where everyone seemed to think it was normal for any situation to suddenly turn into a huge musical production. Only here people may suddenly start kung-fu fighting, interacting with video game graphics, having dialogue amplified by a laugh track and dissolving into gold coins upon defeat by an enemy. All without anyone batting an eye.

One of the group we went with is convinced that this movie is going to be some kind of game-changer and that it will have massive mainstream success. I personally think it's going to be an instant cult classic but that it's victory will be a little more modest in the short run. In other words, it ain't gonna make a lot of money, but it's still going to be talked about five and ten years from now, while people struggle in vain to remember what the hell The Expendables was.

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

We considered seeing it, but I'm opposed to many of the things pilgrims stood for so we saw Inception instead and I don't know if my earlier post about the movie was real or a dream.
I have nothing else to say at this time.

Mae Whitman (aka Ann/Bland/Egg) is in this. I can't wait to see it.

We saw Scott Pilgrim last night and I thought it was pretty good. Here is a list of a few of the video game references from the movie.

I thought the movie was just too long.

We saw it and loved it. Yes, the movie was about 20 minutes too long, but very entertaining.

So if you are not a video game fan (but a Michael Cera fan) would you still enjoy the movie? I doubt I would pick up on any video game reference that wasn't Super Mario Bros.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I think you'd like it. Lots of the references are nostalgic for the days of Mario and Mortal Kombat. I haven't played video games in years and I still enjoyed the hell out of the film.

Loved it. I'll side with the crew saying it was about 20 minutes too long (I could have gone for about 4-5 exes), but overall just a ton of fun.

Really good. Anna Kendrick is becoming one of my favorites actresses. And Michael Cera seems to be slightly less Michael Cera-y every movie, although he definitely does that character very well.

Also, I can't wait to listen to the soundtrack tonight.
