  • Dwight Yoakam

I'm an avid fan. Such a great mix of rock n' roll, traditional country, hillbilly, honky-tonk and twangy sleaze.

I love his older stuff; Guitars Cadillacs, 1,000 Miles, Buenas Noches from a Lonely Hotel Room, Streets of Bakersfield and many, many more. Incredible stuff. But his later releases are also pretty amazing. Population Me is my current favorite Yoakam album. Rumor is that we're not too far away from his next album, the first since 2005. For those of you in Utah he'll be playing at Snowbasin on August 8.

    Any other Yoakam fans here?

    I with you YO.

I general hate twang, but Dwight Yoakam works.

I haven't listened to much of his in the last 15 years.

He was the one that started me listening to country music. I haven't listened to him for years though

I may be small, but I'm slow.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

Dwight is the only modern country singer that I like. He was the antithesis to the crap that Nashville was spewing all through the 80's and 90's and on through today.

I learned that his style is an homage to what is called "the Bakersfield Sound". In fact, I just recently got sucked into a documentary on PBS about Merle Haggard. Since Merle has retired in the outskirts of Redding, I wanted to watch and see if any shots of my fair city made it into the piece. Five minutes in and I realized that this was the sound I like so much when I hear Yoakams music. When I was a teenager, I worked at a sawmill in Southern Oregon. I used to do all the menial, horrible work that the seasoned and skilled guys didn't want to do. I spent a lot of time in the machine shops and with pipefitters etc... who listened to country all day. But it wasn't the country that you could hear on the radio. I learned to really like it. I had no idea what it was until I got older but much of it was that Bakersfield sound with the likes of Haggard and Buck Owens etc... Dwight uses that sound, adds his modern flair and wow, it really is an enjoyable sound for me. I wonder if our CUF Bakersfield residents are aware that their city was once Nashville- West?

Have you listened to Dwight sings Buck? Heard it the other day on grooveshark and really enjoyed it.

I don't think so. The rumors of a new album appeared to be internet lies!

First the Big 12 and now Dwight Yoakam. I don't know if I can ever trust the internet again.
