    My most romantic movie character

For me, a romantic movie character can't be drawn from an ensemble cast. The character has got to seize the screen and be larger than life, which is why I've left off supporting role Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) in Spy Game. He or she has got to have a semblance of a love interest, so I'm omitting the Arthur role (Clive Owens) from King Arthur and Lt Karen Walden (Meg Ryan) in Courage Under Fire. There can be a happy ending, but romantic figures are so much more romantic in a sad ending, with love lost. And in general, I find Englishmen to be somewhat namby pamby so I've eliminated Brit actors like Ralph Fiennes in The English Patient, and Colin Firth in anything.

    Here are my Romantic Characters:

    1. Woodrow F. Call (Tommy Lee Jones), Lonesome Dove
    2. Lloyd Dobbler (John Cusack), Say Anything
    3. Mac McKussic (Mel Gibson), Tequila Sunrise

and since I should throw a female character in there,

    4. Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), End of Innocence.

    Anyone else?

I might have a warped view of romance, but my three fav's are

Emily Watson, Adam Sandler in Punch, Drunk, Love
Nic Cage, Elizabeth Shue Leaving Las Vegas
Kate Winslett, Jim Carrey Eternal Sunshine

edit: I know I didn't answer the question but I don't look at it as just one character but look at the whole thing together

Interesting list. I'll have to watch Tequila Sunrise.

As I read along I kept thinking that Ralph Fiennes needed a mention, and then you did mention him-- but I can't do much to refute the namby pamby accusation.

Pardon the unoriginal choices from me, but I'm so down with Yuri Zhivago (Omar Shariff) and T.E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole). They seem to have that heavy presence of character (my way of describing larger than life, I suppose).

Or, as Gene Siskel once observed of both Lawrence and Zhivago, "Hell yeah, there be some serious gravitas up in them bitches."

I was watching a Tommy Lee Jones movie a few weeks back and it dawned on me how extremely unattractive he was for some of the types of roles he played.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Exactly - and how many roles does he play? I can only think of one off the top of my head. Oh, wait, I forgot about Batman Forever, that makes two.

Well, his looks work in something like No Country for Old Men, so it's not particularly noticeable. But in the movie I was watching he was this leading man type, and it made me realize that his face just seems off for that role.

Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

                      Our tax dollars at work.

Also... I thought Robert DuVall was a bigger character and more romantic in Lonesome Dove. Considering Diane Lane and everything...
