  • GURU dies at 47 years old

Gang Starr was really one of my favorites of the jazz/rap hybrid. One of the best but never really got the same pub as bands like A Tribe Called Quest (although I did like Tribe better).

One of the best Gang Starr songs. Great example of the nice laid back jazz sample. DJ Premier did always save his best beats for Guru and Gang Starr.

in fairness, Gang Starr really didn't touch the Jazz like Guru's solo stuff. Daily Operation was their best by faaaaar.

I meant to say Hard to Earn. Whoops!

Also, nobody has really mentioned the falling-out that happened between Guru and Premiere. Does anyone know what really happened? That's some cold shit, Guru.

"In the letter Solar says Guru wrote for his fans, it says: "I do not wish my ex-DJ [DJ Premier] to have anything to do with my name likeness, events, tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.""

A lot of rappers, including Questlove and Freddie Fox, questioning the authenticity of the letter. The letter also goes on to praise Solar and how Guru thought his work with Solar was his best work and to ignore his work with Premier.

Apparently, Solar also cut off Guru's family from him and wouldn't give them information on his condition or let them see him.
