    Muse Concert

Went to the Muse concert last night in Oakland (Silversun Pickups opened). It was a large venue (where warriors play), but still a lot of fun.

I'm not a concert guru in the least, so take this for what it's worth, but it was the best show I've ever seen. Not only did they sound great and kept it tight, but the lighting and set were amazing. They're coming to Denver in October, so I highly recommend going if you're in the area.

Matt Bellamy, the lead singer/guitarist is a musical prodigy, I believe. His solos on both the guitar and piano (and keytar!) were just incredible. He has a lot of classical musical influence too, which I really enjoy. I think he's basically a modern day Franz Liszt.

I was pleased, too, that they played a lot from their first two albums, which I like more than some of the recent stuff, so if you want to see their whole body of work, this show will have it.

The wife went to the Muse show here in Salt Lake with the two oldest kids and their friends. She said it was a terrific show.

That is a great lineup for a concert. I am jealous

Yeah, i was actually surprised by the number of families and older crowd that attended. There were also plenty of potheads, anarchists, etc., to balance everything out.

Silversun Pickup has a song on the MLB 10 The Show game. I am starting to look into some of their music.

This is the same way I found out about Bowling for Soup. They had a song on the NCAA 07 game a few years ago.

I don't get Muse. I went to the SLC show and let me first say that The E Center has horrible acoustics. Second, I didn't get the Mormon Mom infatuation with Muse, until I asked a girl at the show. Apparently the vampire book writer LOVES them and they have been on the movies. That makes sense. I still can't make sense of why anyone would see those movies though. That was the most eclectic audience I have ever seen.

The stage for Muse was definitely cool and the highlight. I can't say Muse isn't talented, they just don't seem original to me. Their songs seemed to be blatant ripoffs. DM, david bowie, queen, you name it. A song would start and I would start off going, "wait, I know this song." It just wasn't the song everyone else knew.

Let me end in saying Sounds like you had a great time and That is what shows are all about. Sorry is I peed on your parade. I was going to write this up a week ago but forgot. Your post reminded me.

I'm in the same boat with Muse. I don't dislike them, I just don't like them. They are a radiohead ripoff (even their recent SNL appearance).

The music is good. I just can't get into it much. It reminds me of my relationship with U2 music. Not coincidentally, Muse toured with U2.

I didn't know Utah moms like Muse, but I do remember statman saying he was really excited to go see them.

Speaking of music, I am off to Coachella tomorrow morning for the all-day event. More on this later.

muse's new stuff is garbage, but their more classically oriented stuff (origin of symmetry, showbiz) is a lot better. space dementia is probably my favorite muse song. i just feel like a lot of their stuff is radiohead-lite, but they're missing thom yorke's subtlety. this is especially true of that really dumb, really popular song of theirs that sounds like it was written by an eighth grader who just read 1984.

Yes! It seemed a lot of their songs were like tired teen anthems. "you can't kill us, you can't stop us." or weird chant crap with basically the same message.

I forgot to throw in Radiohead in their mimicking.

I like 'em, but don't love them (though I really think Black Holes and Revelations is a great album). Out of the bands that came up riding the coattails of the Radiohead sound, they're definitely my favorite, and I much prefer them to Coldplay.

My wife loves them and really wanted to go, but the show was way too pricey for us right now. Seeing Retribution Gospel Choir for $12 is about all I can pull off these days.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

A fair point re: similarities to depeche mode and queen, although I think this has been a trend in the last two albums, which I've liked less than earlier stuff. Songs like New Born, Hysteria, Stockholm Syndrome, and Space Dementia, I'd be curious to know what those are ripoffs of (honest question, they might just be, so I'd love to hear the 'original').

As far as the vampire writer and movies go, there will be no defense of that from my end.

I tried learning Space Dementia on the piano, it's my favorite song too but sadly they didn't play it last night.
