Today in my teachers quorum class we were trying to get everyone's cell phone number so that we could get in touch with them etc. One of the kids on his turn to tell us his number says "867-5309" The other leader with me just wrote it down and said alright. Well played I say, I didn't rat him out.Get confident, stupid

Since Hot Fuss, the Killers have been one of my favorite bands. I haven't even listened to their new album yet because Human is so terrible and the writing so sophmoric. Their Bowie-esque second single Spaceman is much, much better, and has given me some hope that there's decent material to be found on their new record.Human is a great song! It certainly isn't 'just awful.'
Not at all. There's a discussion on one of the Radiohead boards I read about "what is pop music?" and I swear the thread is going on about 100 pages right now. Opinions vary, but to me there is no broader categorization in music than the word "pop."Pop just stands for 'popular,' no?
I was thinking about the question you posed just now as I drove down to the fish market. I came to the conclusion that any list of favorite pop songs would only be a list of my favorite songs. I consider all the bands that I love to be pop bands, and 99% of the music I listen to I would in some way, shape, or form describe as pop. Thinking through the albums I've listened to over the last couple of years, I came away with only two that I wouldn't define as pop. The first is Original Silence II by Original Silence, and the second is Jonny Greenwood's score for There Will Be Blood. Though both Thurston Moore and JG come from a pop background, so I would certainly entertain arguments that each album featured some pop influence or aspects to it.So just name a few of your all-time favorite popular songs, stuff with massive appeal.
Even records by the Fuck Buttons (which spent a lot of time in static), No Age (lots of experiments into noise and feedback), and Damon Albarn's collaboration with the Chinese National Orchestra incorporated some elements of pop music. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

JT is a total badass. I love that guy.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostJustin Timberlake puts on a hell of a performance. I think that folks who have called him the true heir to Michael Jackson are about right. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

My favorite pop song of the moment is My Girls by Animal Collective. That song is glorious. Stunning harmonies, intersecting melodies and a terrific chorus...like the Beach Boys filtered through the space-time continuum. A damn near flawless pop song.Last edited by MarkGrace; 01-18-2009, 04:39 PM.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

No Cheap Trick Surrender?Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostSo I downloaded a bunch of Killers tunes, all of the 'best of' choices that folks here suggested, and I thought they were all very... nice. But with the exception of Human, none of them are going to enter the pantheon of 'favorite pop music.' What are your favorite pop songs? Here are a few of mine:
Human, The Killers
Hey Yeah!, Outkast
Champagne Supernova, Oasis
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2
Closer to Fine, Indigo Girls
Yellow, Coldplay
South Side, Moby
The Girl From Ipanema, Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

I'm trying to decide if the other leader is really old or really young. You'd have to be older than 55 not to get that one. So my guess is the guy was in his 20's and somehow just never managed to hear it.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostThe other leader with me just wrote it down and said alright. He is late 30s, maybe 37. I think he was just not paying attention.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostI'm trying to decide if the other leader is really old or really young. Great stuff, mp.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostNothing to me says pop like avant-garde Jewish jazz. As such, John Zorn's Masada - Karaim is my favorite pop song.
