• One of the Coolest YouTube Videos You'll Ever See

Dude put this together totally from clips from other people's YouTube videos. I can't even imagine how much time it took to find all of these videos in the same key, same tempo, etc. Add to that all the time to cut everything and sync it up perfectly and you have quite the project.

Pretty cool. It reminds me of DJ Earworm:

It seems like the church has lightened up a bit on telling people what media they should and should not be consuming. I definitely watch my share of crap, but I've found I also seek out well-made, wholesome media to balance things out. One of those things was the YouTube channel Outdoor Boys.

I'm sure many of you are aware that Luke Nichols, the creator of Outdoor Boys, is LDS, a BYU grad, and an attorney. After finding some success on YouTube, he moved his family from the D.C. area back to his home state of Alaska and became a full-time YouTuber. After creating hundreds of hours of content and amassing over eighteen million subscribers, Luke mostly retired from the platform. He's currently leaking out a few previously shot videos. Luke was also just called to the Young Men's General Board.

A month ago, Steven, the creator of the MyLifeOutdoors channel, posted a video about his wife's cancer battle. Luke got wind of it, contacted Steven, whom he'd never met, created a special episode of Outdoor Boys, and gave it to Steven for his channel. Usually, the videos posted by MyLifeOutdoors generate around 100k views. The video Luke gave them is approaching 11 million views. MyLifeOutdoors had approached 600k subscribers before posting Luke's video and now has over 1.1 million. For Steven and his wife, this act of charity changed the game.

There are many ways to be charitable, but this is something I haven't encountered. Kudos to Luke for finding a unique way to serve someone in need. You're welcome for the warm fuzzy.

Luke is awesome. I’ve been watching Outdoor Boys for at least the past year. He’s a master at his craft and he oozes Mormon. He hasn’t totally retired but just significantly slowed down, and I guess now we know why. I’d love for the church YM program to do an Outdoor Boys themed program or camp every year

Walking away from 18 million subscribers blows my mind. I wonder what kind of money he was pulling in. Still pulling in, probably.

Quick online search estimates he could be pulling up to $5 million annually. I think that would be on the higher end, if he were leveraging his page for ad sponsorships, which I don't think he does a ton of. At least not enough to be annoying.

I know people with far smaller audiences than that who make/made a ton of money. That number wouldn't surprise me.

Maybe he decided he had enough money to be happy and comfortable and decided that time is more important at this point.

I'd wager the residual income is significant. I've searched for how much he's made over the years but the estimates vary wildly. Here's a report just for the last two weeks with possible estimated revenue. Keep in mind he's putting out very little content.

I started watching Outdoor Boys within the last year or so when a ward member talked about the channel. Really well done, interesting videos - even though a lot of them follow a very similar formula.

He’s been fairly open that the reason is mainly that he likes the private life. He didn’t mind when he went to dinner and a couple people recognized him. But when it became more celebratized (people stalking him, not being able to eat out with family, etc) that he decided the fame wasn’t worth it. He’s made enough money that I’m sure he had an easy time hanging it up. But I imagine he’ll still do videos here and there. He originally did weekly videos, and then every other week. That is an incredible grind.

He’s also helped his oldest son get a channel started, which of course is already doing good numbers. So he’s basically setting his kids up for life as well as long as they don’t go crazy like some other YouTubers.

Taskmaster is awesome. If you haven't watched, you should. If you haven't watched any of it, I highly suggest starting with the Jason Mantzoukas season. He was absolute chaos on it and it was really fun.
