    Avatar: The Last Airbender

Last month my family and I finished watching the last episode of Nickelodeon's cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. I purchased all three seasons on DVD. It was so choice.

I think it's one of the most exciting small children tv shows out there. I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old...that can't make it through Disney's Robin Hood etc without being scared. They both love Avatar: The Last Airbender though. The show did a great job at finding that elusive balance between excitement and fear. I have thought long and hard about what makes the show so tolerable for my 4 year old...and i am almost sure that is has to do with its lack of anticipated evil/conflict. My children usually cower in fear when a movie's music turns eery or scary. Avatar seems to deliver them swallow-able chunks of drama without being too over the top.

Also, the show never depicts enemies being killed. Which is remarkable for a show set in war times. And the main protagonist is a practicing Buddhist who denounces any kind of violence or ill will. It has some of the best character arcs ever written for a series of its kind. This show is gold for children and adults

It's a great stepping stone to eventually introduce them to movies such as Star Wars etc.

Yesterday a new Full Length Trailer came out for M. Night Shyamalan 's next movie: The Last Airbender. (The name Avatar was omitted to avoid confusion with some other unknown indy film.)

This is going to be the first installment of the 3 movie series. I have high hopes. I know Shyamalan can direct...it's his WRITING and STORY that have been his weak points in his last 4 movies. Maybe now that he is using somebody else's material he will be able to shake this slump.

Just thought I would share my enthusiasm!

Cut and paste job, eh? Just can't tell which one is the original.

I've never seen the TV show but am interested in the upcoming movie. Here's an interesting editorial criticizing Shyamalan for using Caucasian actors in the movie: http://www.salon.com/entertainment/m...ender_open2010
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I should follow up my last comment by saying that I have now seen several episodes of the original TV series and it's unlikely that this movie will match up. The original is quite well done.

Despite my urgings, my wife and kids are totally hooked by Avatar. My wife actually shooed me out of the room the other night when she was watching the series finale. She and my 7 year old will be seeing the movie soon. I'm not invited.

He is like George Lucas in that he seems to be convinced that he can do it all and as a result doesn't bring in others with whom he might successfully collaborate. Only with Lucas you can understand it since his movies and merchandising have made him worth 3B or so.

Dude, he's already done that with THE HAPPENING. It's an impressive feat to set a bar that low and then still manage to limbo underneath it.
