  • The Beautiful South

To avoid any further threadjacking, I thought I'd set up a TBS thread just to express my love for a once great band.

I was introduced to them when just a lad. The first song I heard was Prettiest Eyes and I was hooked. To this day that is my favorite song and I'm waiting for my wife to turn 60 just so I can use it in some way, shape, or form to celebrate her birthday.

I previously said I haven't heard anything after "Blue" but I lied since I actually own "Quench." But I haven't heard anything after Quench, which in my opinion was not a great album.

In order of favorite albums (at least the ones I own), I would put them as follows:

    1. Miaow
    2. 0898
    3. Welcome to the Beautiful South
    4. Choke
    5. Blue is the Colour
    6. Quench

I've heard they finally broke up but have reassembled themselves sans Heaton, which is a shame since he is TBS.

Any other TBS fans out there?

I love TBS. One of my all-time faves. If you stopped at Blue, you are missing a bunch of excellent stuff. Quench is fantastic, btw...The Table, Your Father and I, The Slide, Perfect 10, etc....great B-sides, as well.

The double disc Painting it Red is awesome. Gaze is good and Superbi is also very good. PDH did a solo under the name Biscuit Boy but it basically sounds like a TBS disc. The single off it, "Mitch" is very catchy, a la most TBS tunes.

I couldn't rank all the discs. I love them all. But I will say that Welcome To...is still my fave. I saw them in 1989 at The Roxy for Welcome To.....I bought a t shirt that had a pic of the woman with the gun on the front and the smoking guy on the back. It always drew stares and comments from people.

I've been an avid collector of their stuff, as I really enjoy much of the artwork associated with their releases. The teddy bear cover of Welcome To..is one of my prized TBS possessions. Very hard to find.

I really enjoyed the 0898 art work by David Cutter. In fact, we have a poster here on CUF whose avatar reminds me of something by David Cutter from the 0898 era. Lost Student, I think is his moniker?

I was lucky enough to see TBS live with Briana and with Jacqui. unfortunately, jacqui left the band literally a a few days before they came to LA for the PIR tour, so the last time I saw them live (at House of Blues), they had no female vocalist. The setlist was all mixed up because all of a sudden they were doing songs that had no female singing parts. In a way, a very cool gig. I seem to be bad luck for bands. I also saw Smashing Pumpkins right after they fired Jimmy and I was at the Jesus and Mary Chain concert in LA when they quit mid-song and walked off stage forever.

    Anyway, yeah...love TBS.

As noted in another thread, The Beautiful South is one of my favorites.

My favorite albums in order are:

        Welcome To The Beautiful South
        Miaow
        Choke
        Blue Is The Color

I didn't follow them after Blue. Not sure why, as they were still making good stuff.

I've just heard some negative reviews on their newer stuff and never got around to listening to it. By that time I was in school, didn't have any money, and was perfectly happy with their old stuff. It took me forever to find Choke though which was a tough find before the invention of the internet.

None of the newer stuff is available on iTunes so I'll have to look around for used stuff.

I'm jealous you saw them in concert. I didn't discover them until they released Miaow and was then pretty young so I never saw them in concert. Plus I grew up in a location that wasn't frequented by British bands, especially ones that were used to playing for large crowds. They probably couldn't have filled up Club DV8 back in the late 90s.

Aiming higher and bypassing the usual board geriatrics to call DDD old? I'll have to pay more attention to your body of work.

"We Are Each Other" is one of my favorites...

Gosh. You totally took me back a few years. The Connells and The Sundays were also my favorites...

I love The Beautiful South. My favorite song is Something That You Said. The lyrics are twisted. I became a Paul Heaton fan during his Housemartins days. Good stuff.

This seems to be a trademark of theirs. I love the tune to Women in the Wall then I actually listened to the lyrics and thought "what the heck!" Now I love the song even more because of the twisted lyrics.

If anyone knows where to buy piano sheet music for TBS songs I'd love to know. I'd love to learn Song for Whoever on the piano.

Their lyrics are one of the reasons that lead to the original split with Briana.

I think she had enough and by the time they wrapped up 0898, she had enough. Songs like 36D, Something that You Said, and others that were particularly violent and macabre towards women led to several arguments.

It was probably good that she left when she did because once they sat down to focus on Miaow, I think Mini-Correct would have pushed her over the edge completely.

Can't you just download sheet music off the web? A site like musicnotes or somesuch should have it, no problem, I would guess.

Yeah, Il Pad for being such a crotchety, anti-intellectual curmudgeon you do have some excellent musical taste. I guess that is sort of a backhanded compliment...but you know what I mean.
