  • Jasper Fforde Nursery Crimes

I just saw one of my favorite patients, a librarian who is a voracious reader. We always spend 5 minutes talking about his health then 30 minutes talking about books. He highly recommend I pick up

I'm generally not a fiction reader, but this guys recommendations have never led my wrong before. Has anyone read either of these books?

My wife has read them and really enjoyed them.

I haven't read them but from my patient's description it is British humor and written primarily for adults or older teens. It didn't sound like it was crude, but just lots of dry humor.

I've read both of Jasper Fforde's major series and loved them. The Nursery Crime series is by default a bit less cerebral than the Thursday Next Series (a bibliophile's playground chock full of literary witticisms and allusions), but also very enjoyable. Either series I would recommend to most anyone. Jasper Fforde is a brilliant author.

I picked up an ebook copy of Fourth Bear on your librarian's recommendation. Good, light read. I plan on buying a copy for my brother's FIL who is the world's reigning pun king as far as I'm concerned. I loved that Fforde would take the setting of the opening chapter and
Spoiler for Town Name and Joke:
name it Obscurity just to set up a joke midway through the book having the town vicar utter the line, "You'd be surprised by the number of people who die in Obscurity," and never revisit again.

            Thanks, Art.

I bought it for my wife for Christmas. She is still plowing through Don Quioxte so hasn't started it yet. After she finally gets around to reading it, I will read it.

I'm currently reading Fforde's latest installment (apparently the first in a trilogy) called Shaes of Grey. It's pretty wacky so far, and probably the least mainstream of his books, but I'm enjoying it. Fforde is endlessly original.

Just found this thread after Mrs. Funk told me she was a Fforde fan. I just finished The Big Over Easy and enjoyed it quite a bit. As I mentioned in the "What are you reading?" thread, the great wordplay put me in mind of bits of Monty Python and Douglas Adams. (I hope it's understood that I mean that as high, high praise.)
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I tried to read Shades of Grey, man that was rough. 50 pages in and I couldn't take the horrible color puns anymore.
