WHat criteria do you apply to decide if a song is good or is high quality and worthy of praise? Let's talk about popular music, although if someone wants to discuss Jazz or classical or some other genre that would be great, just make it clear it is a different genre.

Music that connects with you on some level. My definition is different than yours and always will be... Umami.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Music that gets me toe tapping. Music that connects and evokes an emotional response."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."
"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

Funny, I never would have pegged you as a toe tapper. Either way, you're in luck! We just happen to have a thread highlighting some real toe tappers. You may want to check out Lionel Richie and Dire Straits.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostMusic that gets me toe tapping. Music that connects and evokes an emotional response.

I'd have to say that is where I fall as well.Originally posted by Babs View PostIsn't that what Pandora is for? To tell us how we each define good music?
My what you usually like page tends to include such gems as "simplistic melodies," "elementary rhythms," and "repetitive phrasing."
lol.
Even with classical music, I like things I can hum or whistle later.
Of course, some repetitive stuff can be grating, so there is a balance.

These are interestgin responses and conisitent wiht what most people would say. Some fo you posters are much more opinionated about music, however, nad I am curious if you can articualte what you look for to qualify somethign as good or if it is, in then end, just a subjective and visceral response based on what you like the most.
IOW, if you become educated about more complex music, you tend ot like more complex music. The possibility is that your educated preference doesnt mean the music is better, it just changes what you like, while the purpose of the music, its raison d'etre, is still satisfied as much by MMmmm Bop as it is by Beethoven's ninth. The only real difference is the reaction of the listener.Last edited by creekster; 11-19-2009, 10:24 AM.PLesa excuse the tpyos.
