    Why Twilight?

    Stephanie Meyer was a roommate of my girlfriend's at BYU. I don't really remember her.

    I like success stories. But why is Twilight so successful?

    My thoughts:

    1) Girls really do like bad boys
    2) Vampire genre is perfect for our economic times: empty, sucked dry, preyed upon, etc
    3) The gap between what women want and what they are getting continues to widen. For my part, I have no idea what women want.

      I've never read a page, but I'll share a funny NYT column I read somewhere (on here, maybe?). The woman contrasted the teenage girl reading about a vampire who loves the heroine so much that he doesn't want to have sex with her with the teenage boy across the street looking at naked women on the internet who seemingly want to have sex all the time, and noting that it may not be pretty when these two worlds collide on their first date.
      At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

          My wife says it is a function of hitting the right chord with women. She says the romance is great because the girl is weak and is being cared for by a strong male character. She says she read a paper about this very issue, investigating why teenagers in America are seeking to be taken care of, as opposed to the feminist movement.

          Quite fascinating. It makes my life miserable, because I'm not a vampire.

                      Vampire popularity is cyclical -- every 15 years or so you see a resurgence. The reason:

                      - Sex
                      - Violence
                      - Immortality

                      It's the perfect combination. Same reason the Bible is so popular.

                          It is an interesting phenomenon. In addition to being incompetently written, the main vampire is a creepy, manipulative stalker, and also somewhat of a fruitcake. The author clearly understands her audience though, as to them this guy is dreamy perfect. It probably does have something to do with a young woman's need to feel safe, but damn there's some pathology going on if this is how they want to get that feeling.

                              My wife and I read these books. She is not a fan of Edward (the vampire). She likes Jacob (the werewolf). I'm not really sure what women like about the vampire. Having read the books I can tell you that he is, indeed, creepy and whiny. The heroine is completely illogical (which partly explains her obsession with the vampire) and downright annoying.

                              I think chicks like the book because it offers some sort of escapism. People (not just women) want to believe that there is more to life than what we perceive as reality. The idea that there is a hidden society of magical creatures that we unknowingly interact with on a daily basis has always been a popular theme. This is also part of the reason why the Harry Potter books are so popular.

                              I think the romance thing is just icing on the cake for women. Men like to escape to more violent fantasy things like star wars or star trek and women escape to romantic fantasy things.

                              Those of who, however, who think that these are romance novels are going to be very disappointed if you actually read them. It is romantic like you and your sixth grade crush were romantic (Do you like me check yes or no).
